Liebster Award

So, I’ve been nominated twice in the past week for this Liebster Award by the lovely ladies at Keeping it Real Food and Nutritiously Sweet.

There are three different badges that I’ve seen for this award, and I’m going to just post them all here and you guys can decide which you like best:

Random Facts About Me:

1. I would still say that my favorite food is peanut butter even though I haven’t had it in about six months and can’t even remember what it tastes like anymore. Sad but true.

2. My dad is 6’3″, my mom is 5’7″, and my brother is 6’2″. I’m only 5’6″ so I am the short one in the family.

3. One of my best friends and I are obsessed with Leonardo DiCaprio. We always manage to talk about him when we are together.

4. I played clarinet in high school and was in the color guard for marching band.

5. My favorite color is pink though I almost always wear blue or black (I only have 2 pink shirts in my closet at college).

6. I love making lists and time schedules for things to do when I’m done with class. I rarely stick to them.

7. (Never)homemaker was the first blog that I ever read. I stumbled across it when looking for a  chocolate cake recipe involving Greek yogurt.

8. I hate shoe shopping.

9. While I have a complete set of sheets and a very nice quilt on my bed, I actually sleep on top of them with just a fleece blanket. I’ve done this since middle school and my mom gets so annoyed.

10. I’m currently staring at my still unpacked bag of laundry from Sunday. I really don’t like hanging up clothes. (I actually just put my clothes away a few minutes ago…).

11. When I was little I taught myself to use Microsoft Office and would make PowerPoints and fake websites for “fun.”

11 Questions That I Have to Answer:

1. What are your desert island albums?  Wow Christmas, Lonestar‘s Let’s Be Us Again, and any Backstreet Boys/N Sync album.

2. How did you celebrate your last birthday? With a Scooby Doo Party!

3. What’s your favorite way to spend a day off? Reading, blogging, or watching a movie with my family.

4. Hot weather or cold weather? Err. I’m going to say hot weather because I don’t have very good circulation so my hands and feet are always really cold.

5. Do you have a “signature” dish you make? What is it? I am infamous in my family for making awesome things in the microwave. But there are a lot of other things that I can make well too like homemade pizza, cinnamon rolls, banana bread, sugar cookies, chili, chicken and dumplings, goulash, etc.

6. When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up? I always wanted to be a teacher like my mom, dad, and aunt.

7. Do you think all water tastes the same? No. Like Jessie said, Aquafina is terrible! It tastes all milky and weird. I also don’t like Nestle, but I can’t really remember why. My favorite bottled water is Deja Blue.

8. How many times have you moved in your life? Let’s see… First time to the house in town, Second time to the Apartment… Third time to the house in the country, and then Fourth time to college… Does college count? Ya. I think it does.

9. Blogging or Vlogging? Definitely blogging. I like making vlogs, but I much prefer to stay as “behind the scenes” as possible. Plus, videos aren’t flattering at all, especially to my voice.

10. First phrase that pops in your head when you hear “It’s snowing?” No School!

11. What’s your favorite fruit and vegetable? Favorite fruit is bananas, and favorite vegetable is butternut squash or zucchini. I can’t decide!

11 Questions for You to Answer:

1. What is your favorite brand and style of jeans? American Eagle Artist Jeans.

2. Do you prefer hot or cold beverages? Hot!

3. If you could marry one celebrity, who would you pick? Leonardo DiCaprio… Duh!

4. How many places have you lived? 5.

5. What is one bad habit that you want to break? Eating right before I go to bed.

6. What is your favorite “secret” guilty pleasure tv show? Vampire Diaries or Pretty Little Liars.

7. What was/is your favorite class in high school or college? Ethnic Studies.

8. If you could have one thing for free, no matter how big or small, what would you pick? The smartest doctor in the world on speed dial- free of charge everytime 🙂

9. Lake or ocean? Ocean.

10. Do you get dressed up even when you stay at home for the day? Not me!!

11. How many blogs do you read on a daily basis? A lot. Maybe twenty??

Now for something that I just discovered today. Remember when I asked you all about GOMI awhile back? Well, apparently they decided that this picture from my WIAW was worth mentioning on their forums:

turkey-meatballs-squash

I believe some of the comments referred to these meatballs as “brains.” Ha. What’s funny is that’s exactly what I thought when taking the picture. They actually reminded me of one of the movies that I watched when I was younger- Spy Kids:

It involved Antonio Banderez creating a “third brain” that would eventually be used to create robots that looked like his children. And that’s what you get…

Father Cortez working on the fifth brain

I kind of want to know what their suggestions are though. My body reacts poorly to all types of grains, seasonings are basically out, and oils/nuts make my stomach want to curl into a ball and hide… What else could I do with ground turkey other than make burgers (which coincidentally involve oil)?

*Edited to add: I acknowledge that they probably just don’t know about my food allergies and serious digestive issues. I mean, why would they? I think all of you would have stopped reading by now if I posted an annoying disclaimer at the top of each post saying: “I have food allergies. My food is so plain; hear me roar!”

meatball-aliens

Anywho… Time for questions!

———————————————————————————

Answer one of the questions above.

What is the ugliest food that you’ve ever made? Might be hard to beat meatballs that look like brains, but we’ll just have to see about that.

  1. Thank you so much for the nomination, love!! That was so sweet of you and totally made my night/early morning….Sooo i got really excited when i read that you played the clarinet and were on colorguard….me too!! Although I stopped playig clarinet after 8th grade….not something i had the heart to pursue in high school. I loveee vampire diaries, too…just discovered it on netflix…not even a vampire fan but i can’t get enough…there are worse problems in life 😉

    • That’s too cool. I kind of missing band, but from seeing how stressful it is on those in my classes, I’m glad that I didn’t join in college. I watched the Vampire Diaries on Netflix too. Better hurry up so you can watch the next season on Hulu.. before they become Hulu Plus… *Shudder* I HATE when that happens and I have to wait a gazillion years to watch the next episode. 😦

    • I’ve never done shoe shopping online because I feel like my size varies so much from store to store. I have a range of 9 1/2 to 11 and they all fit perfectly. Maybe I’ll be adventurous and try it one day though 🙂

Glad you liked it. Haha. I literally opened up Paint on my computer and started drawing on them before I even realized what I was doing. Seriously, about five minutes after seeing that GOMI forum post I had transformed my meatballs into little aliens 😀

  2. Thanks for nominating me friend! You are awesome!

I wouldn’t worry about Gomi too much. I had a whole thread dedicated to me. I can’t cook at all which is why I never put it on the blog, there would be a whole site dedicated to lolz is a cooking failure. Anyways, that being said not every food is gorgeous..since when does peanut butter look appetizing you know? People just find reasons to rant…

    • Sure thing! I can’t wait to read your responses for the random facts part 🙂

That little section didn’t bother me too much, because I pretty much agree with them. I do however think it would be wise that they do just a “little” research before being so harsh. I mean, I only have so many options with my allergies! And I totally agree with you in regards to peanut butter. When looking through Google images to find a picture to use I actually thought “These look kind of disgusting.” I guess people really do change because I used to be OBSESSED with it 😀

      Thanks for the sweet comment!

  3. I totally saw that thread on GOMI yesterday, then came over here from your comment on WIAW, and didn’t realize it was the same person! I enjoy the snark on GOMI, though sometimes it crosses a line of just being rude/mean for the fun of it, and sometimes, as in your case, is missing context. I’m sure you wish you could put oil and spices on it!

    • Yes. I am officially the queen of the “nastiest food ever.” Lol.

Thanks for popping on over! For the record, if I could have tomatoes, I totally would have made better looking meatballs 😀 Actually… that’s probably not true. They would have looked bloody, gross, and okay, I’m done. I don’t want to also be called the nastiest *blogger* ever. Haha.

  4. Thanks so much for the nomination!! 🙂 I loved reading your random facts and answers to these questions, that scooby doo cake is pretty much the best thing I’ve ever seen, do you have a recipe? I was a total Nsync-er back in the day, I can’t believe you hate shoe shopping, and I also played the clarinet. I quit after middle school though :-/

    • Here’s the recipe: http://www.omnomicon.com/rainbowcake

I personally didn’t eat it so I didn’t have to make any adjustments, but I think any gluten-free white cake recipe or cake mix box would work well.

Shoe shopping stresses me out. Once, a friend, my mom, and I went to an outlet mall to go shopping. There was a huge sale going on at the Bass shoe store for buy 2 get 1 free. I had zero dressy shoes at home so my mom “forced” me to pick out three shoes. They’re kind of expensive, so I took it really seriously and I think we were there for almost two hours. I almost died and my friend still laughs about it til this day. Not a pleasant experience. Oh, and as far as tennis shoes go, the past three years I’ve just gotten the newer version of the same shoe. Haha.

  5. Haha I’ve never heard of GOMI before but I’m now intrigued and want to check it out 😛 Leo will forever be a heartthrob, I think he was my first movie star crush? I blame it on Titanic… And I hate ironing/ hanging up clothes too, thumbs down!

  6. Admitted to finding you through GOMI :). So sorry about your food allergies, that must really be tough. As far as making them less brain-like, I would just roll them up in balls instead of just pulling the meat apart and tossing it in the pot. Should help with the stringy brains! Keep up the good work, I like your blog, and obviously others do since you got a neat award!

    • That’s totally fine- Thanks for being honest 🙂

The problem with rolling them up in balls is that because it’s lean meat I’m afraid that they’ll fall apart when I drop them in to boil. I don’t know if that’s just me being paranoid or what, but I think normally it’s the egg that keeps them together, right? *Sigh* We’ll see! Maybe I kind try to find another binder, like mashed squash or something.

And thanks for looking past the martian meatballs. 🙂 I just checked out your blog and your son Harry is adorable!!

  7. Ha ha, I love that you agree about Aquafina. I seriously don’t know how people drink that stuff. It’s DISGUSTING in every way possible!! I’d prefer warmer weather vs cold as well. I have the worst circulation and am always freezing! Hate it!

    Cold > warm food.
Favorite study in school: Chemistry & history.

    • Glad someone else is always cold! Haha. My dad now makes sure that there is a blanket in the trunk whenever we go on trip for than half an hour. Haha. He hates hearing me complain 😀

I’m surprised by the Chemistry answer. I really liked science, but I think I liked Biology and Physics more than Chemistry.

  8. Thanks so much for the nomination; it made my day!!
My heart did break a little when you said you hated shoe shopping though. My feet are teeny tiny so I can never get shoes in stores, and I love shoes more than a sane person should. I would love to be able to sit down and try a bunch on in a store. Instead, I do all my ordering from Nine West and Zappos. Zappos has free shipping and free return shipping…can’t beat that.
I wouldn’t lose sleep over the GOMI stuff; just think all publicity is good publicity, and you handled it really well. My WIAW is all kinds of ugly food, but the reality is sometimes food just isn’t pretty, so you’re just keeping it real.

    • I think I have the opposite problem. I tend to average a size 10 in shoes and there are never any cute shoes in the store that are a size 10. Ugh, they always seem to be a size 7! I actually learned a lot about Zappos in my Marketing class I took during the Spring. They sounded like an amazing company, and with free shipping, I may just have to check that out.

Thanks for saying I handled it well. I know many bloggers who take different approaches to GOMI, ignoring them, or creating a riot. And all have their purpose, but I just wanted to acknowledge and laugh it off. And yes, not all food is pretty! Like soup… Soup is wonderful, but rarely looks edible when snapped on camera. Haha 😀

  9. Thank you for the nomination love! LOVE pretty little liars and vampire diaries! Two of my top favorite shows I believe!! I’m the opposite and adore shoe shopping…clothes on the other hand. Not a fan. Don’t worry about the GOMI comment. It’s annoying when people judge you from a single post and don’t know the background of issues happening! You handle it very well though! I don’t think I’ve ever been mentioned in that site…that I know of ha.

    • I’m excited because they just released two new episodes on Hulu. Definitely going to watch them tonight!

It is kind of annoying, and thanks! I think you were mentioned once, in passing or something, but it wasn’t really about you in general. Haha. 5 seconds of fame…

Hope you are having a great weekend!

  10. I’m the short one too!! Dad = 5’11, Mom = 5’6, Middle Bro = 5’8ish (maybe 5’9), Baby Bro = 6’3, Chels = 5’3. It’s alright — I make up for it in cuteness. 😉
Hot pink is TOTALLY my power colour. I wear it when I run, but only then. haha. And I TOTALLY used to sleep the same way. However, now the sheets and quilt are gone and it’s just a bundle of random blankets overtop, the number of which changes with the season. I hate having my feet tucked in.
AND OHMYGOODNESS THAT SCOOBY DOO CAKE IS FREAKING AMAZING!!!
I didn’t know that was your picture on GOMI — I have to admit, I laughed because they looked like brains, but I’ve made meatballs that looked very similar. It’s turkey right? I’m glad you’re rising above. You’re SO right about the research aspect of things. I’m also happy that you’re self-assured enough to know what your body needs and to not make apologies for it. 🙂 Keep rocking on, lady.

    • Finally someone else who knows how I feel! 🙂 All of my friends who are tall come from tall families, and all of my friends who are short come from short families. Frustrating!!

That bundle of random blankets sounds like me at home. Whenever I get cold I just pull blankets from random rooms of the house. Haha.

Yes, it’s turkey. And they DO look like brains 😀 Honestly, I’m glad I posted something about this, because I never knew that this many bloggers read GOMI too. Makes feel not quite so bad! 😀 Great post today, by the way!

  11. Oh dear! I was too long with thinking of answers & questions for my post the the awards hehehe and I had tagged you too! Nevermind! Was great to read your answers and facts above 😀

  12. Hey
I love your GOMI response (I read there and saw the conversation about your turkey balls – sorry -allergies suck!!)
If only more bloggers could respond with your humour!
