Summer Loving Survey (WIAW)

I wish I could say that I spent my weekend relaxing like so many of you kindly suggested on Friday. While I did lounge around for most of the weekend, it was anything but relaxing with our air conditioning being broken. The thermostat stayed around 86-88 degrees from Saturday morning when I woke up to Sunday afternoon when I left.

Call me a wimp, however since I am used to a cool 70 degree atmosphere in both my apartment and office the heat at my house was basically unbearable. My fingers and toes were bright pink and swollen. It doesn’t really help that all of our fans are in my mom’s classroom at school since we never need them. I guess we should have realized that the air conditioning wouldn’t last all summer because every year something breaks.

Eventually I pulled out an unopened fan… Only to find that it didn’t come in one piece and I proceeded to spend 30 minutes with a Phillips head screwdriver putting it all together. Multiple episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer were consumed while I assembled the fan and later laid in its direct path with a bag of ice at hand to cool down.

On Friday I mentioned that this week I would share pictures from a few birthdays over the weekend- my mother’s on Friday June 21st and then my brother’s on Monday June 24th. Unfortunately though my brother woke up on Saturday sick and later on we found out he had strep throat so no party for him. Hopefully this coming Saturday he can have his friends over like planned without any glitches.

Speaking of all things summer, I’m finally getting around to this neat survey that I saw on Sarah’s blog last month. Created by Abby at Abby Eats Almonds, this survey is so fun to fill out.

1. Describe your perfect summer day.

I am not one for calling anything “perfect” because to me a good day can comprise of so many things. Friends or family. Inside or out. It’s all about the right combination. One example of an ideal day for me would be a trip to the park complete with a big ice cream cone and later on a good movie with my favorite people.

2. Favorite BBQ food.

Slow Cooker BBQ Baked Beans from Better with Sprinkles

Nothing brings back memories like a plate full of grilled hotdogs, homemade baked beans, homegrown corn on the cob, and freshly baked rolls topped with butter and jelly.

3. Favorite article of clothing to wear in the summer.

Shorts, t-shirt and flip-flops.

4. What color is your favorite swimsuit?

Black. Judge all you want but bathing suits (does anyone else call them that?) make me very self conscious. That will never change. It’s not entirely a body image thing for me. It’s more a I-don’t-like-feeling-like-I’m-not-wearing-any-clothes issue. Until full piece body suits become the acceptable fashion in swim wear I am always going to roll with the two piece tankini in the boring color of black.

5. Ice cream or Popsicles.

Cookie Jar Ice Cream from Koko Cooks

I have to be honest- when I saw the choice I just laughed. Is this really a tough decision for anyone? Right now if offered the two I would have to choose a Popsicle for the sole reason that the ingredients in ice cream wouldn’t settle well with me. However, ice cream will also be my #1 food. In particular, chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream served in a cone.

6. Which is better 65-degree or 85-degree weather?

As long as I have a functional air conditioner I would pick the 85-degree temperatures. If some type of cooling machine was not included though, I would greatly consider picking the 65 degree option.

7. Pick one- a day spent hiking or at the beach.

Since I am allergic to mosquitoes and swell up terribly when bitten, I am going to have to say the beach. Who wouldn’t want to get tan, swim in the ocean, and collect seashells? If only there was some way to prevent all of that sand from sticking to you and from accidentally swallowing sea salt water every time you enter the ocean.

8. Current favorite song of the summer.

Radioactive by Imagine Dragons.

9. Favorite summer workout.

Even though it will sound completely cliche, swimming is definitely my favorite workout of all time no matter the season. Sadly I haven’t had a chance to swim in our pool yet this year because of the weather, being away from home, and my brother being sick this past week.

10. Baseball games or music festivals.

There is a local band shell at a park that puts on events every week during the warm season months. They showcased blue grass bands and local music groups. At the end of the summer they also hold a ballet put on by the premier ballet studio in town. The ballet includes the oldest and most experienced dancers in a combination of classic pointe work as well as modern freestyle. One year they had a few dancers do an entire set using desk chairs. It was so well-choreographed and fun!

11. What is your favorite month of the summer?

June is probably my favorite month because summer is still fresh and new. July just drags on and August goes by way too fast!

12. Favorite summer memories.

I was really lucky growing up that both of my parents were teachers so they didn’t have to work over the summer. That meant that almost everyday we were all home together (except for my dad who sometimes picks up extra college classes over the June-August months). This gave us plenty of time to go on day trips to the zoo with my cousins as well as the best vacation of my childhood- Disney World! I went with my parents and brother, as well as my aunt who helped watch over my brother and I while my Dad was in class (he was on a business trip and wasn’t able to go to the parks with us every day).

I am linking this post up with both WIAW at Peas and Crayons

and Jessie Bear’s Together Tuesdays because of all of the fun recipe recipe links that I shared!

Random fact: There is a thunderstorm going on right now. I LOVE thunderstorms.

Answer any of the summer questions above!

Do you call it a bathing suit or a swimsuit?

Do you have either an air conditioner or fan at home?

Are you a wimp when it comes to the heat?

  1. I loved this survey too πŸ™‚ I agree with you about the tankini being a much more comfortable bathing suit choice. I’m trying with some bikini tops, but tankini will always be my fav. My family always spent summers together, too…my dad retired when i was was five so the four of us spent every summer together on Long island, running around the beach, boating, eating our weight in seafood and having lots of ice cream on the docks πŸ™‚

    • I own a bikini I think, but have never worn it. I think that’s a great idea to try to get out of your comfort zone; however I think I will leave that one to you πŸ˜‰

Wow. Was your dad older than normal when you were born? That would have been great to have your dad around all of time. Sounds like the perfect summer. Beach, seafood and ice cream πŸ™‚

    • NOO!!! You did not just say that. Literally whenever my brother and I went to pick out an old episode to watch I said ” As long as it doesn’t have Spike I don’t care.” Haha. It’s not that I didn’t like Spike as a character, I just didn’t like him with Buffy. Angel was my favorite of Buffy’s boyfriends. I just felt that Spike was too old for her (looks wise… I realize that Angel was like 200 years old. Haha.).

  2. Awe so sorry about your AC! I would be miserable too.
Shorts + t-shirt + flipflops is my summer outfit of choice too! And I agree that the perfect summer day would definitely include lots of ice cream πŸ˜‰

  3. My apartment has ceiling fans in each room and central air. It’s been in the 90’s everyday in Denver, so both are needed! I try not to use the air unless totally necessary because it get’s so expensive!!

    • 90s everyday? I hope it has cooled off a little bit. Good thing you have a nice set up for cooling off! πŸ™‚

I only turn my air on at night and when I get home from work. During the day it’s off because it really does cost a ton!

  4. Thanks for linking up, love! Oh and thank you so much for commenting on my work blog. Always makes me happy :).

Oh and I love Buffy but I would die in that weather with no AC. I am SUCH a wuss when it comes to hot weather! Love the survey too- I’ll probably end up filling it out sometime soon too. I miss Abby’s blog though :(. I hope it comes back soon!

    • I think it’s so neat that you are blogging for work on top of your regular personal blog. That would be awesome!

I noticed that Abby’s blog disappeared… Is she just taking a break or do you know? She really came up with a great survey πŸ™‚

  5. I’m definitely not a wimp when it comes to the heat, but right now I am a wimp when it comes to my allergies playing up. And I call it both a swimsuit and a bathing suit πŸ˜€

  6. Nothing worse than when the air conditioning is not working. We had issues when it first got hot. Had to call for repairs. Fortunately I have coverage for it. We’re comfy now thank goodness. Enjoy your day, Madison!!

    • Ours is still on the fritz. Basically the repair man said that we will need to buy a new one since we got this one when we built the house 13 or so years ago 😦 Needless to say with the high price we are still air-less. Haha.

  7. I love the heat, but I’m not of fan of it being a million degrees in the house, especially when you’re trying to sleep. Thank goodness for our air conditioner; although, we’ve had our break too at the most inopportune time. It’s NO fun…I feel your pain!

My favorite article of clothing to wear in the summer are dresses! They’re easy and cool!

    • I think what I like is the sunshine and the lack of coldness, but perhaps not heat itself? Lol.

I have been enjoying dresses this summer too! Something that I’m sure all of my friends would balk at if they could see me. You could say that I’ve been anti dress/skirt basically my entire life πŸ˜‰

  8. No AC or fans in my appartment, and last week it was 85 degrees in my bedroom. At midnight. Not fun.
I’ve been thinking about getting a fan, but it’s cooled down to 55 degrees this week again. I hate this kind of rollercoaster weather.
I love thunderstorms, too! They are so beautiful.

    • So you know how I feel then! πŸ˜€ I hope you are enjoying moderate weather right now… Not too hot and not too cold, all you need is a light jacket πŸ˜‰ (Have you ever seen Miss Congeniality? Please say yes or that quote will seem kind of out there. Haha.)

    • Thanks Alex! I’m gearing up for that ABC survey that’s been circulating around recently too, but I’m going to hold off for a few more days because I think at least ten of the blogs that I read normally have posted it this week. Ha.

  9. I’ve seen this survey before, too, and love it! Hopefully I’ll have time in the next week or so to do it myself… πŸ˜‰
I am with you all the way with the tankini – and also the color! I’ll sometimes branch out to other colors, but most often they’re dark because I find that’s the most flattering. Hopefully some day I will feel confident enough to go out in a bikini, but for now, I’ll stick in my comfort zone, too.
I like the song, but that music video is just bizarre. And kind of morbid. They’re something very disturbing about stuffed animals and puppets beating each other up.
It really is great having a parent(s) who is a teacher. I loved having the summers off with my mom growing up. πŸ™‚

    • I guess I should have mentioned that my suit is *almost* all black save for a few stripes of color. Lol. I actually have two that are almost identical. So boring of me πŸ™‚

Seriously! That music video is just so odd.

It was so nice to have my parents home over the summer and I’m glad someone else could enjoy the same feeling πŸ™‚

  10. Great post!! I’m totally an A/C girl, I couldn’t survive without it. I’m not a fan of the heat and much prefer the winter so you can pretty much bet my A/C runs all summer long.

  11. Fun survey! I’d do anything for 85 degree weather. It’s been 130 here lately.. FML Ha Ha! Thanks for sharing the song, I never heard it before.. and have now clicked replay 3x already.

    • Oh my gosh! I think I’d need to experience 130 degree weather to believe it. That must be awful. I hope your A/C continues to work (if you have one, which hearing those temperatures I really really hope you do).

    • Thankfully it’s only been about 90 degrees at home. If it was 110 I think we would have gotten the air conditioning fixed sooner. It’s still broken but I think sometime this week we’re getting a new one (so expensive!) and hopefully by the time that I’m home Friday night I will walk into a nice, cold house πŸ™‚

  12. Yay surveys. I love all your Summer choices. I wish we could have 85 degree weather – I don’t think it’s ever been that hot here. We usually just get warm-mild Summers. They’re beautiful, but nothing really hot which I kind of like more.

    • How hot is it normally up in Canada? I always just assume that everyone else has grown up with similar weather but obviously that’s not the case at all. I was talking to a guy yesterday while I was working with him on his accounting software, and he said that his college-aged children had never seen snow (?!). Um… That is completely unfathomable to me.

  14. I like hiking but the beach would win for me every time and I would wear my bathing suit (I call it that too). I would always pick ice cream (my one true love) and musical festivals too. That’s really cool you got to spend so much time as a family in the summer.

    • I wonder if our geographical location affects what we call it (bathing vs. swim). Not that it really matters, but I just find that type of thing interesting. And that may make me the most boring person in the world… Haha.

I’m really grateful for my parents’ jobs. Now that I’m older I realize how much more time I was able to spend with them compared to other kids.

  15. I can completely relate to the ‘I-don’t-like-feeling-like-I’m-not-wearing-any-clothes issue’! I typically don’t show off too much skin in my everyday clothes so wearing a bathing suit in public makes me feel, basically, naked. I also love ‘Radioactive’ by Imagine Dragons. Such a great tune – especially to run to!

    • Ha. You say bathing suit too! πŸ˜€ Just like Meghan (above) and I… Maybe it really is a geographic thing!

Okay, back to your comment πŸ˜‰ I bet radioactive is a really good song to workout too!
