Holy Buckets of Rain Water Batman (WIR)

As you can tell from the title of my post, it rained quite a bit today! Thankfully I was in my car for most of the heavy downpour but when I had to make a quick stop into Whole Foods after work I got absolutely soaked.

At Whole Foods I bought some large bags of non-GMO frozen peas, organic bananas, unscented dish soap (all for me) and some packs of Applegate’s organic sausages (for my family).

For 2.00 off any Applegate product you can go to Facebook and “Stage a Weinervention.” Ha. πŸ˜‰

Skipping back to the weekend before last, I took a trip to Big Lots and did a little hunting for my mom. She is the director of my church’s two week summer reading program and this year their theme is Book a Trip for a Reading Adventure. Usually I get to be in charge of snacks…

But since I’m away from home this summer I’m having to help from afar! At Big Lots I hit the aisles looking for any snacks that the kids might like that fit the theme- I took pictures of the whole aisle of international foods and photobombed my mom’s phone πŸ™‚

Not to worry though because I totally made up for it by buying both my mom and brother some birthday presents there as well!

As I mentioned on Wednesday we weren’t able to have my brother’s birthday party last weekend because he got strep throat, but this weekend hopefully we are able to have it. I have been put in charge of making the cake. Here is my overambitious goal:

I didn’t do much cooking when home except for soup for myself and these pancakes for my dad:

I still need to work on the recipe more before posting. I tried making a peanut butter and chocolate swirl but once flipped the drizzles became more crispy than delicious…. Not exactly what I had in mind 😦

Now for an update on some of the movies and books that I’ve been watching/reading!

This past weekend I watched two new-to-me movies: The Pelican BriefΒ and 21 and Over.

The Pelican Brief was really good and I loved Julia Roberts with Denzel Washington.

21 and Over was… interesting? Overall it was pretty funny, like The Hangover for a younger age group. The images were a little too graphic and vulgar for my taste as well as the rest of my family. The main cast of characters did an excellent job though. It had some of my favorite up and coming actors- Skylar Austin who played Jesse in Pitch Perfect, and Miles Teller who played Willard in the newest rendition of Footloose.

As far as books go, I finished The Moon and MoreΒ by Sarah Dessen last week. Before that I also read a few others that are a little kiddish I admit, but still good- Megan Meade’s Guide to the McGowanΒ BoysΒ by Kate Brian and Perfect Scoundrels by Ally Carter.

I finished the audiobook version of Bossypants by Tina Fey last week as well (I listen to that on my rides to/from home as well as on my commutes to work). This week I checked out Heat Wave by Richard Castle and have been loving it so far! It took a few minutes to get used to the author’s voice reading the thoughts of Nikki Heat, but it’s really addicting.

Almost as addicting as the show itself of which I am now on episode six of the second season. In case anyone else loves Castle you should know that a lot of the episodes are on YouTube!

Speaking of Castle (how random is this post?) I want to squeeze another episode in before I go to bed so it’s time to go. I hope you all have a wonderful Friday!!

*This post will be shared next week with Meghan from Clean Eats Fast Feet’s Week in Review.

Has it been raining where you live?

What good deals have you found at Big Lots?

Have you ever watched The Pelican Brief or 21 and Over?

What books have you been reading lately?

Do you ever listen to audiobooks on long car rides?

  1. I’m going to stick with you from now on! You know all the good books to read πŸ™‚ I feel like we have similar taste. Let me know how that cake turns out! I have been wanting to make it for years!

    • I agree! I’ve heard great things about that book you mentioned the other day, Obsessed, from a few other bloggers so I’m thinking about adding that to my list of books.

I so wish I had made the cake as soon as I saw it because now I’ll never know how it tastes!! 😦

  2. Urgghh yes I feel you with the rain! But our rain is more of a persistent drizzle than a downpour.
I haven’t seen the Pelica Brief but I read the book so I’m quite intrigue. I do love Julia Roberts. 21 and Over…ack not so much. I didn’t enjoy Hangover 2 so I can’t imagine this is my thing!
I don’t listen to audiobooks but I do listen to Podcasts (usually movie reviews and running stuff). It helps with boring journeys!

    • Either way rain rain go away πŸ˜‰

My mom has the Pelican Brief book at home and I’ve thought about reading it. I’m always hesitant though because if I liked the movie I tend to not like the book as much or just get confused. Haha.

I haven’t seen Hangover 2, but I kind of want to see Hangover 3 because I couldn’t stop laughing during the previews πŸ™‚

Podcasts are really neat. That’s a great idea- I should download a few on my phone and change it up a bit on my long drives!

  3. That cake!! Oh my, it looks way beyond amazing (I mean, you just can’t go wrong with cookie dough)! Let us know if you try it πŸ™‚
I haven’t read anything for a while, but I really want to! I will have to check out some of those books you mentioned.
Those pancakes sound awesome. Sorry they didn’t turn out so well 😦 A similar thing happened to me when I attempted caramel swirl pancakes. I guess swirled pancakes are harder to make than they seem!

    • As you’ve noticed… I did try it! Haha… This is what happens when I take FOREVER to respond. Sorry 😦

I think it’s the swirly part that just gets burnt by the high heat. Next time I’m going to try making two separate pancakes batters with different flavors and then swirling those together. I feel like that would work so much better.

  4. I think our rain streak finally ended, thankfully. The whole month of June was really wet around these parts, and a city just 3 hours south of us had to deal with some major flooding. The past few days have been really gorgeous though, so that’s something to be happy about. And omigosh… that cake! Every time I see something like that, I honestly want to run to my kitchen and make it, but then I realize how labor-intensive it is and get a little put off. One of these days, though…

    • I hope you didn’t jinx yourself with this comment πŸ˜‰ Hopefully the rain has stayed away from you!

I am the same way Amanda. I see all of these super awesome-looking recipes and go to make them… Then get discouraged by the hours of long directions and settle for something simpler. Like pancakes. Haha.

  5. Last week we had a ton of rain – so much that most of Southern Alberta was flooded pretty severely. Luckily the rain has stopped and people are starting to recover.

That cake with the cookies looks absolutely delicious! I’m sure your brother is going to love it.

    • I just commented on one your posts about your walk through Baker park (I believe?) and saw where you still had some rain water. Hopefully the flooding is dying down.

The cake was a big hit!

  6. Bossypants is definitely on my summer reading list. I just got an email from the library saying there is a copy ready for me to pick up too!
That cake looks amazing- i hope you try to make it and pictures!

It has been raining in Pittsburgh a lot, too. We got a huge storm right in the middle of my moving day, boo!

Did you like Bossypants? It has been on my To Read list for awhile. Tina Fey is SO funny!

    • Wow. That would be awful to have it start raining right as you are moving. Right now I’m just picturing the last time we moved about 13 years ago and how the moving guys literally just carried out a rod of my clothes hung up because it would be so much easier than unpacking and rehanging… And then when I left for college. So many uncovered boxes!! If it had rained my stuff would have been ruined. I hope all of your belongings were safely inside when it started to pour.

I really enjoyed Bossypants. She was so engaging, especially because I listened to it on audiobook on my long drives, so it kind of felt like we were having a conversation. I’d encourage you to try it out on audiobook, although I’m sure it would be great in print as well!

    • It was extremely messy with the banana unfortunately. It got melty and sticky, although was still really awesome. I found a rice krispie treat one that my mom is going to try next week for the program. Hopefully that will hold up better. I was trying to think of a good paleo version and I think that banana slices wrapped in 100% fruit leather would be pretty tasty.

  8. Everyone keeps finding fun things for good prices at Big Lots! i just found one by me and clearly need to check it out sooner rather than later πŸ˜› It’s been raining here all week…that’s been fun with two small children…..thankfully we got out for a bit yesterday and today but it looks like rain again so i think we’re in for the rest of the day…pray for us all haha

    • Yes! You NEED to go to Big Lots πŸ™‚ It has an amazing selection of packaged food. It’s kind of like Trader Joes almost with their options, but slightly less healthy. Haha.

Definitely praying that you have good weather for the rest of the summer. I remember how much of a bummer a rain storm was when babysitting. 😦

  9. Oh that cake. Holy deliciousness. Good luck making it – I know it’ll turn out beautifully!
I keep meaning to go to the library to grab some audiobooks to listen to while driving. It’s such a good idea!
    Have a great weekend!

    • Have you picked any up yet? I’m always looking for suggestions. I’m trying to stick with ones that I know I will like. One of these days I will probably get a dud with a monotone voice. πŸ˜› That will be a fun three hours!

  10. It rained like crazy last night in my neck of the woods. I mean…literally buckets of rain. It was crazy! The sky’s getting dark here now, so I think something is on the way. So tired of the rain!

The cake looks awesome! I’ll be anxious to hear how it comes out! The pancakes look great too!

  11. I’m glad it has been raining mostly due to the grass dieing ALREADY! NOOO. πŸ™‚ I have never seen The Pelican Brief but I really love Julia Roberts. She pretty much can do no wrong. I love Notting Hill, Runway Bride, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Ocean’s 11/12, Eat Pray Love, Pretty Woman – she is just great! πŸ™‚

    • That is very true. The grass in the front of my apartment has gotten pretty tall… I have no idea if the landlord is going to come cut it soon. Haha. It’s quite a sight.

Ocean’s 11/12/13 are great! I love Julia Roberts and George Clooney together πŸ™‚

  12. It feels like it’s always raining over here 😦 But I love Castle, still think I’m missing a few episodes from the first few series, so I might have to check it out on Youtube! πŸ˜€

    • I think I’ve met my quota of Castle episodes for now, but I shall continue this weekend! I want to catch up. If you’ve missed any, Youtube would be great for you! I hope they have the later seasons as well.

  13. We’ve had buckets of rain all morning today, and I kinda like it. Makes me want to curl up on the couch with a good cook book or a movie. I really liked the Pelican Brief too, and I think all John Grishman books turned movie have come out really well. That cake does look really ambitious, but if anyone can handle it, it’s you. One of my favorite summer desserts (not suitable for a birthday cake though) is mixing blueberries and green grapes and then topping them with a dollop of sour cream and a scoop of brown sugar. The combination is magical. I swear, and everybody loves it. Have a great weekend, and I hope your little brother’s party goes off without a hitch.

    • I love basically everything about rain except when you have to go out in it πŸ˜›

I have never read a John Grishman book which is probably a crime because like you said, his books make fantastic movies.

Thanks for the compliment about the cake! You were right– I prevailed!

That combination sounds really interesting. Love it.

  14. Ooh the books you picked are really good ones! I haven’t seen those movies, but I’m always looking for a good movie to watch! Send your rain to Texas! We’re still in drought down here, so I wouldn’t mind a few buckets of rain!

    • I was just talking to someone in customer the other day and he was commenting that the weather down South was still pretty hot and dry. Have you gotten any rain in Texas yet? I guess this is making up for last year when our crops didn’t do so well from lack of rain.

  15. Holy moly- so many great things going on in this post! My favorite thing? That cake. YUM! IT has been raining lots here as well. My big lots carries all kinds of great specialty food deals! I have never seen those movies, but don’t let that surprise you because I’m not a big movie watcher or TV watcher. I have been reading motivational books by Napoleon Hill and Carnegie (I’m a nerd, I know). I have not listed to an audio book before! Have a lovely rest of your weekend!

    • Motivational books are one thing that I haven’t read much of. I guess the main reason is because I just picture all of the cheesy motivational speakers that I see on tv. But actually I think I would really benefit from reading one. Other than the recent ones that you’ve read, is there an all time favorite that you’d recommend?

I usually view listening to audiobooks as cheating, but in this case I wasn’t choosing an audiobook OVER an in-print book so I didn’t feel too bad πŸ˜‰
