Fun Facts Friday: I’m McQuirky

It’s been awhile since I’ve done a Fun Facts Friday post so I decided to bring it back for today! In this edition I’ve gathered together seven odd (but fun) facts about me.Β The title is also referencing Grey’s Anatomy, which if any of you have watched it then you’d know that two of the main characters were nicknamed McDreamy and McSteamy in season one. This post has nothing to do with television or hot guys… But adding “mc” to quirky just seemed like more fun πŸ™‚

Let’s get started!

1. I have the strange habit in the morning of never buttoning/unbuttoning my pants to put them on. I just pull them right on up. (What a way to start a post, right? Now you will forever think of me as the girl who doesn’t know how to properly dress herself).

2. Sometimes in my spare time I will go find unhealthy recipes in cookbooks or on the web, copy and paste them into a word document, and then create a brand new version that’s lower in sugar, grain-free, paleo, vegan, etc. Only a small percentage of the time do I actually end up making them, I just enjoy recipes in general. I’ve been known to even take a cookbook to bed with me and read it like a novel.

3. In high school whenever I have a rough day I would go to my bookshelf and pull out one of my favorite novels to read. Usually a J.K. Rowling, Sarah Dessen, Ally Carter, Rachel Meade or Cassandra Clare. If it was a particularly stressful days sometime’s I’d even settle down to my favorite childhood books like Nancy Drew πŸ™‚

4. Speaking of some of my favorite authors, the first blogs that I ever read actually weren’t food or healthy living blogs but author blogs. Meg Cabot was probably the first, followed by Sarah Dessen and Ally Carter. I still follow them all and read every single one of their posts.

5. I know a lot of people dislike watching movies pr tv episodes more than once, or Β having to read the same book twice… But I’m the complete opposite. Given the chance to watch a new movie or an old favorite (like Harry Potter, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Sweet Home Alabama, Star Wars, etc.) I would be more likely to choose the old movie. See, when you’ve already read/watched something you whether it’s good or not. If you haven’t read/watched it yet there’s a chance that you’ll end up wasting hours of your life on something awful. Why not stick with the familiar?

6. The other day Alex actually mentioned something odd that I do too. I can’t stand sleeping the normal way under sheets and a bedspread. No matter where I’m at- home, apartment, hotel (especially at hotels!) I always sleep on top of the bedspread with another blanket on top. I’ve done this for a pretty long time much to the annoyance of my parents.

7. I love search engines. That may seem really random (which it is) but I genuinely like to just pull up yahoo! or google and look things up. It’s like a challenge to me to see what’s available online to learn about. Imdb and wikipedia are probably the two most visited websites in my internet history (besides bloglovin and wordpress that is!).

And that wraps up another Friday post. After clicking Publish I’m going to get my food prep done for tomorrow, get ready for bed (minus the pajamas which I already put on when I got home today πŸ˜‰ ) and read a few chapters of a new book that I got at a thrift store last week.

Tomorrow I’m pretty excited because my family is driving up to stay the weekend with me. My brother and I are going to a baseball game Friday night with free tickets that I got through work, and on Saturday/Sunday we are going to explore the city a bit and try to find something fun to do. Maybe watch a movie.

Questions for you:

What makes you McQuirky?

Do you sleep on top or under your bed sheets?

Are you someone who likes to reread or rewatch things?

  1. I love Sarah Dessen! I also sleep on top of my sheets (it’s easier to remake the bed!) and I totally re-read the same books again and again and again, I like to think of it as hanging out with an old friend πŸ™‚

    • That’s a good point about being easier to make the bed. Just another reason that sleeping on top of the sheets is the best πŸ™‚

I completely agree with rereading a book like catching up with an old friend. Sometimes I’ll just pull out a book looking for a certain chapter, read it, smile, and the feel so much better!

  2. I had to mention that I finally read the city of bones books like you recommended and ended up reading the first three in 5 days!!! They were seriously that good! I also just went to the mall tour and got have a conversation with Lily, Jamie and Kevin the main characters! So because you recommended that I got hooked on the book/movie even more!

    • So glad that you liked them! I cannot wait for the movie. I check on the release date every day… not that it’s going to change or anything (I wish πŸ™‚ ). What?!!! You got to have a conversation with them? That is so sweet. I wish you were still blogging so I could hear a recap of it πŸ™‚

      • I went to one of the stops on there mall tour and got an autograph and was able to talk to them! I’ve been thinking of getting back into blogging its just a bit time consuming at the moment

  3. I can rewatch things, but rarely reread things!! I only sleep on top of my top blanket when it’s really hot out!! Otherwise I sleep under! HA! I think it’s awesome you don’t need to unbutton your pants, when my pants were super loose on my I would do the same, but now I have to unbutton them to get them on..HA!

    • Maybe the habit started for me in the summer, because I remember when I was a lot younger doing the same thing of sleeping on top of my bedspread if it was hot out. Now I even do it in the winter no matter how cold I get. Last year when I went to wash my sheets I realized that I had so many layers of blankets under me. Haha. I just kept piling them all up apparently.

There are a few pants that I have to unbutton to pull up but those always seem like more work to get on so I don’t wear them as often. Lol. Dub me strange.

    • Thanks Melissa πŸ™‚

I can totally relate. Whenever we clean off the kitchen table my mom finds gobs of post it notes, scrap pieces of paper, and envelopes with my “recipes” scribbled all over them. She always asks “Do you still need this?” and thankfully I’ve stopped hoarding them all and actually let her throw them away (unless I actually made the recipe successfully and then I post it on here!).

  4. I’m definitely with you on turning to my favorite books when I’ve had a rough day AND being able to reread the ones near and dear to my heart countless times. There are some books that I’ve probably read 10+ times because I love them that much and they almost never fail to make me feel all warm and cozy inside… and it’s mostly ones that I read when I was younger, too. But you’re definitely a weirdo for reading recipe books like novels πŸ˜‰

    • I like rereading books also for the fact that I can get through them so much faster because I already know what’s going to happen and who all of the characters are. I think I need to keep an eye out on Amazon and buy some of my favorite books electronically if they ever go on sale. That way I literally have them with me ALL OF THE TIME πŸ™‚

  5. Harry potter cures everything. I love to read them whenever I’m craving a good read and I swear I pick something new each time! I’ve never watched greys anatomy before- I am the biggest sissy when it comes to medical things and even medical comedies/dramas are a no go!

Sounds like you have quite the weekend coming up- family time is always great!

    • I completely agree! Harry Potter is the ultimate comfort whether it be the books (my #1 choice), the movies, or even interviews with the stars/J.K. Rowling on youtube (my latest obsession these past few days… Did you know that the author originally planned to kill Ron?!!).

I haven’t watched Grey’s Anatomy for awhile, but the blood and stuff never really bothered me. I can handle gore. What I can’t handle is awkward/embarrassing shows (like the Office… I could never sit through a whole episode without walking out of the room for a breather. Michael was just too much. Haha).

  6. I read cookbooks like novels as well! They’re probably my favorite way to unwind after a long day and I have a huge bookshelf just filled with them :). Ahh Harry Potter. That series was my childhood and I cried when I finished the last one! Even now, thinking about the series coming to an end makes my heart heavy!

    • I need to acquire more cookbooks. I’ve gotten in the habit of just finding recipes online for everything, but cookbooks really are awesome! I got a little teary-eyed with the last Harry Potter too. I believe we had what people call Post-Potter Depression. Haha.

    • Well one time I found blood on the sheets and ever since then I just can’t. No way. Besides, most people don’t sleep on top of the bedspreads so it’s not quite as bad… At least that’s what I tell myself. And if it makes you feel any better sometimes I bring TWO blankets. One for underneath and one for on top πŸ™‚

  7. I have seen How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days about 10 times. I love it. I love watching films over and over. Some films I literally know back to front. And books as well. But I always like to leave a big gap with books – like I really, really want to read Harry Potter again but I read it about two years ago and I don’t want to ‘over-do’ it and lose the magic. So I hold out on it and save it for when I really ‘need’ it hehe.
In terms of sleeping… I’m an under-the-covers kinda girl. With my feet ALWAYS sticking out. They get too hot otherwise. But I always sleep on my back.
Have a great time with your family πŸ™‚

    • I think I lost my copy and was so sad when I went looking for it the last time 😦 I need another $5 deal at Wal-Mart to come up so I can purchase it again. Lol.

And that’s a good point about needing a gap. I don’t ever read the same book multiple days/weeks in a row. There’s always a good amount of time in between.

Complete opposite. No matter how hot I get I can’t have my feet uncovered. I feel so exposed. I think it’s a lingering feeling from when I was little and afraid of the monsters snatching my feet from under the bed πŸ˜‰

      Thanks Anna!

  8. Love posts like this because I feel like it’s such a cool way to get to know people! I definitely love re-watching TV and movies. Mostly TV. Specifically awesome teen dramas like Dawson’s Creek and One Tree Hill!

And I’m the same way with books – books make bad days better! I used to love Sarah Dessen! And your love of Rachel Meade – did you read the Vampire Academy books? They’re a guilty pleasure of mine!

    • I agree! You don’t really get to know some just through recipe or exercise posts. Oh yes to One Tree Hill too πŸ™‚

I loved the Vampire Academy books. I’ve read them so many times! I haven’t read the spin of series with Sydney yet, but they’re on my to-read list.

  9. Loving the quirky facts! I am the opposite with the bed sheets – I have to be covered! Even if it’s a million degrees out, I need something on top of me- haha

    • I guess I should have clarified. Lol. I have to have a blanket on top of me too, but I it’s just a fleece blanket and I sleep on top of my “actual” bedding. Haha. I agree- even if it’s super hot I still have to have that feeling of a blanket on me or else I can’t fall asleep.

  10. Yes!!! I love rereading/rewatching things!!! Ultimate form of comfort for me. I get a kick out of reciting all the lines from HP and LoTR anytime I watch them, too. I’m a great person to watch those with, right πŸ˜‰ i think one of my mcquirks would be that i prefer to eat my food with the smaller utensils that came with our silverware. I have no idea what they’re actually for or why we have them, but they help me make my meals last a little longer (i’m a speed eater πŸ˜› ), and I like that! Have a great weekend with your fam girl!!

    • There is a video on Youtube where the Harry Potter cast all share their favorite lines from the series. Basically everyone was there except for Daniel Radcliffe. Emma Watson probably said my favorite line “Now, if you two don’t mind, I’m going to bed before either of you come up with another clever idea to get us killed, or worse, expelled.”

I hate having big silverware because I’m a fast eater too and usually end up getting through my meal in 5 minutes or less if I’m not careful πŸ™‚

You have a great weekend too Caitlin!

  11. I’m definitely McQuirky.
I re-watch movies/shows all the dang time. I never saw Pitch Perfect until last month….and my husband and I have literally watched it (mostly just portions of it) 8 or 9 times! It’s so sad but I just can’t look away.
As for sheets, sometimes when I put new ones on I’ll accidentally sleep on top of them, but ordinarily, I sleep under them. It would make it much easier to make the bed in the AM, though.

    • How did you live so long without seeing that movie?! Lol. It is one of my favorites of all time now. On a whim we bought a copy on DVD and I’m so glad that we did. It was funny in theaters and it’s still funny at home. I have the CD in my car too to listen to all of the songs πŸ™‚

It does make making my bed so much easier. haha.

  12. I do the same thing with my pants! I never unbutton/whatnot even when I’m going to the restroom (Major TMI, please don’t cringe) The making unhealthy recipes healthy random fact is my life in a sentence. I do that for fun. Another weird, cringe-worthy detail.

Your favorite authors are so similar to mine! Nancy Drew books are always the classic fallback plan πŸ™‚ I’m totally the type of person who reads a book to improve the day. Usually I’ll end up finishing it in one night because I can’t bare to not know what will happen!

As for the old movies, I just finished watching the Harry Potter series on ABC family and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days last night. I love me some British actors and Matthew and Kate Hudson!

Last but not least, I never sleep under the covers. It started out because I was too lazy to make my bed in the morning, so I just wouldn’t undo it, but over the years I’ve bought blankets that I use instead of my bedspread. My sheets have probably been slept on twice maybe. EVERYONE in my family thinks that I’m the only one who does this, so I’m showing them this post! πŸ™‚

Sorry for the long comment! Everything was SO fun and relative, so I got a little carried away.

    • Haha. Not TMI. I do the same thing too πŸ™‚

I know the feeling when reading books. Especially if it’s a good one I’ll try to stop and just can’t fall asleep because I HAVE to know what happens!

I wish I still got ABC family because their marathons (especially Harry Potter) were the best!

I just buy blankets too- especially fleece blankets which are my favorite. You are definitely not the only one who does it and I’m glad this post will prove you right. πŸ˜‰

Never apologize for a long comment. I love reading (and writing them myself)!

  13. Ha Ha Ha I never unbutton my pants when putting them on either. I’ll even complain to Joshua if it’s a bit harder to do (you know gaining some extra lbs will do that). He just laughs. I mean I guess I could be normal and unbutton them… but i think I’ll just stick with wiggling my way in lol

  14. Oh my god! Ally Carter fans for the win! I love her and also used to follow her blog before other blogs. And, ahem, I also like never undo the buttons on my pants. I’m a terrible person. I never read Nancy Drew, but I did read Trixie Belden (very similar).

    • Yes! Ally Carter is awesome. I should be a little ashamed to admit that I read her books I guess because I’m above the intended age of her readers, but they’re just good, wholesome, and quite captivating.

I guess we are both terrible people. πŸ™‚ And I’ve never heard of Trixie Belden but I’m looking her up now- you should read a Nancy Drew novel just once for the experience. Haha.

  15. I re-read and watch old movies ALL the time!!! I don’t even know how many times I’ve watched the whole Harry Potter series (or read the books!). By the time I’m done with the last Harry Potter movie, I’m ready to start all over! (And yes, I AM a Harry Potter nerd. πŸ˜‰ ) I’m totally with you on the tried and true. I like new books and movies too, but I never tire of the old ones either.
And last year at college, I slept on top of my sheets and comforter every night and then had a separate fleece blanket to keep me warm. It makes making the bed the next morning so much easier. πŸ˜‰

    • It’s been far too long since I’ve done a full Harry Potter marathon. It may have to wait until my next long break… like Christmas! ( 😦 )

Exactly. I love new things too, but sometimes it’s just nice to rely on old favorites.

I slept over my comforter at college with a fleece blanket on top too πŸ™‚ Even then I didn’t always make my bed because it was a bunk bed and no could see up there anyways πŸ˜‰

  16. I love doing that with recipes, too. Typically, I do it only when I’m going to make the recipe, but I find it fun to experiment like that.
While I love new books and movies, I am definitely one to re-read. I’ve read the first four HP books I think 8 times each, just because I love them so much. I mean, why not if it’s a good story I can get into again and again? The same goes for the movie Love, Actually. I could watch that over and over again and never get sick of it.
I hope you and your family have a fun weekend together!

    • I think if I had someone around to eat all of the food that I want to make then I’d be baking a lot more of my recipe experiments!

I didn’t have the chance to reread Harry Potter last year because I had so many literature books to read at school, but this year I only have the classic textbooks so I’m hoping that I’ll have more time to read more fun novels (like HP).

Everyone says that Love, Actually is so good. I’m not sure why I’ve never seen it. That needs to change πŸ™‚

  17. I’m glad your family is coming to visit you this weekend. You’ll be able to show them the city and maybe do some exploring yourself.
I LOVE (yes, CAPS LOVE) to reread books and re-watch movies. I have some books I’ve read countless times because they just make me happy. I also read every single Nancy Drew book growing up and still have the books packed away in a box in my attic.
I sleep under the covers, but I sleep with my eyes partially open and I tend to bend my body like a pretzel. It’s not uncommon for me to wake up with my knee next to my shoulder.

    • My mom and dad came armed with big plans for the weekend- most of the things were less than 30 minutes away and I didn’t even know were there! I guess that’s what happens when you work all day.

I have tons of my grandma’s old, original musty-smelling Nancy Drew books still on my shelves at home. I haven’t read them all but I have plans to dig into them because I know they’re a quick read.

My brother sleeps with his eyes partially open too. No offense, but it’s a bit creepy. πŸ˜‰ My mom always said when he was younger that he slept with his eyes partially open because he didn’t want to miss out on anything.
