My Weekend Baking Adventures

Did anyone else’s school have fundraisers growing up? Wrapping paper. Candles. Frozen pizzas. Chocolate. Magazines.

My brother is currently in the midst of a magazine fundraiser to raise money for when the high school band goes to Disney this next Spring.

I’m kind of a magazine addict. Really, I should show you all my stacks and drawers of magazines sometime. It’s ridiculous.

Currently I get Eating Well, Cooking Light, Seventeen and Nutrition Action. In the past I’ve also gotten Fitness Magazine and a few other less than stellar choices like Discovery Girls and some dog magazine… From library sales I’ve acquired back issues of magazines as well like Shape, Self, Prevention, Weight Watchers, Health, etc.

The main point of all of this is that I need some advice this year on what to choose. I’m looking for any suggestions on magazines that you’d think that I’d like. Whether they be food, fitness, fashion, whatever. Just leave your suggestion in the comments and I’d be really appreciative!

Now onto my Week in Review and MIMM post to link-up with Healthy Diva Eats and Clean Eats Fast Feets. Let’s start listing, shall we?

  • At school before I left for home on Friday I downloaded Part 1 of Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire on audiobook.

  • Unfortunately I didn’t get to listen to it much though because I was too busy trying not to crash while it rained like crazy. Eventually I had to pull over at an exit and wait for the storm to calm down a bit.

  • When I finally got home I was a little wiped out and decided to not go with my parents to the away football game. Instead I stayed in and made a new recipe. Pumpkin Pie Bars!

  • Saturday was spent just lazing around and hanging with Lilly.

  • We also did some grocery shopping and bought some delicious squash.

  • Later my dad rented Now You See Me from Redbox. It was just as good as I expected!

  • Sunday morning I made another pumpkin recipe… Pumpkin Apple Cinnamon Rolls.

  • And promptly burnt my arm when removing the cookie sheet from the oven. Drat.

  • Before I left for school again I also made some roasted chicken and vegetables. I had a bite of the squash from the vegetables, and some of the chicken de-skinned and it was so good!

  • My parents were super nice and decided to drive part of the way back with me later that day. Surprise surprise though when it started to rain again. Hard. Like on Friday we had to pull over. My dad took the lead and my mom and I followed him in my car until we made it until the half way point where we go our separate ways. We stopped at Wal-Mart while there to get some new windshield wipers for my car.

  • Thanks Dad for installing them for me!

  • I didn’t get back at school until it was already dark so I didn’t have any time to write up this post last night and instead focused my efforts on Accounting and Astronomy.

In other news, I only have a three day week thanks to a Fall Break at my school. One day down. Two more to go πŸ˜€

Magazine recommendations please!

What did you make over the weekend?

Was there any ridiculous rain where you live too?

  1. The magazines that I actually purchase are Glamour, Women’s Health and Self…others I usually just read in B&N. Those pumpkin bars look amazing, hope to see a recipe soon πŸ™‚ I actually baked apple chips and m&m brownies this weekend along with roasting some veggies!

YAAH for fall break! (although I don’t have one, I’m happy you get sometime off:))

    • I don’t think I’ve ever looked at Glamour before. I need all of the fashion help I can get. Haha. I’ll have to look into that one. Thanks! πŸ˜€

      M&M brownies sound amazing!

Oh I wish you could have a fall break too.

  2. Hey there! Been a long time follower of your blog, thanks for writing interesting articles! I recommend Cosmopolitan and Southern Living magazines. I’m from the South so…Southern Living is a must, haha. And Cosmo is truly one of my favorites.

    • Thank you for commenting Kaylin! It’s so wonderful to hear that you’ve been enjoying my blog πŸ™‚ Feel free to comment whenever!

They should make a Northern Living for us up here. Haha.

  3. Cannot wait for the pumpkin bar recipe! It rained on and off this weekend, stupid Melbourne weather. I used to get mens health and mens fitness but they just repeat what they say, or contradict themselves!

Going to download the HP audiobook too- thanks for that πŸ˜‰

    • I agree with you on the repetition in magazines. That’s part of the reason why I prefer cooking magazines because they shake things up and there is ALWAYS something new to try foodwise. I’m hoping that some of the fitness suggestions I get will help me avoid that.

Yes! Go listen to some Harry Potter audiobooks on Youtube πŸ™‚

  4. Ohhhh! I’m excited to see those recipes…somebody definitely got bitten by the baking bug this weekend! Sorry about your arm though…happens to me ALL the time! Life of the accident prone! It rained ALL weekend here too…Sunday was pretty much spent planted on the couch with the man-friend…and Netflix! πŸ˜‰

I don’t subscribe to very many magazines since I don’t have a lot of time to actually look at them, but I will NEVER cancel my subscription to the Food Network Magazine…I’ve had it since they started publication! I love all the recipes (anything from beginner to more intermediate), food facts, interviews with the chefs, and there’s always this really cool thing in the back…a little contest of sorts to name a new dish! I never actually enter, but it’s fun to play around with different ideas!

    • I was trying to make up for lost time from last weekend when I was sick and was only able to make one recipe. Ha πŸ˜€

Oh how I wish I could have been cuddled up on the couch with some Netflix during the rain instead of driving. Sounds perfect.

Food Network Magazine- I don’t think I knew that they even HAD a magazine! That’s a great suggestion. The food facts and interviews would definitely be something that I’d love. I don’t really make the recipes in the magazines… I just use them for inspiration so Food Network would be great for that.

  5. My dear – you have become the queen at making a wide variety of cinnamon rolls. I can’t wait for you to share both recipes… you are right?! Glad you made it back to school safe and sound. Driving in the rain is the worst!

    • That is one title that I would be honored to have πŸ˜‰

Of course! I’m going to share the pumpkin pie bars tomorrow!

Thanks Jessie. I was a little frightened while driving to be honest. I just couldn’t see anything!

  6. We had some crazy rain in DC yesterday! It’s been hot lately, very summerlike, but after yesterday’s rain it cooled down dramatically… Now it’s really starting to feel like fall!

  7. I can’t wear short sleeved shirts when Im taking something out of the oven because I always end up burning myself — long sleeved shirts keep me safe. But then I end up brushing my arm against the hot water kettle ad end up with a burn anyways lol. Oh fails.

I don’t really read any magazines on a regular basis, but I like Glamour, Cosmo, Self, and Shape on occasion. I used to love Clean Eating, buuuuut the company went bankrupt 😦

    • Brilliant idea. I’ve been known to accidentally rub the top of my arm up against the inside of the oven as well so all around I’d be protected with long sleeves πŸ™‚

The same thing happened with my Disney Adventure magazine subscription when I was younger! Well, okay, I guess Disney didn’t go BANKRUPT obviously πŸ˜‰ … but I think it just wasn’t making them enough money. The replacement subscription was so awful I don’t even remember what it was.

  8. Ouch on the burn Madison! Hope it heals super soon. I love all the magazines you can buy, I think I’d be baking and reading all the time if I lived there! We have a much smaller selection, though there are a few goodies and I always try to pick up Shape (the US) version when I can here, though it is super pricey.

    • This burn doesn’t actually hurt at all thank goodness!

I kind of just read the magazines like I would a book. Lol. I go back to them once in awhile just for fun… Rarely did I ever make something out of the cooking magazines but they always gave me great ideas!

Shape is a great fitness magazine. Too bad it’s so expensive. Magazines are pretty cheap over here with a subscription.

  9. I’d reccommend Runners World but it might not interest you too much hehe πŸ˜‰ I love it though. I always do a little dance when it comes through the post.
I always end up burning myself on the oven, oven tray or some sort of steam when I’m cooking. Or ironing! I’m a walking disaster.
I really want to see Now You See Me. I was hoping it would be one of the movies on the plane to/from Mexico but alas it was not. I will definitely be renting it though.
Surprisingly I did some baking this weekend – I made oat and raisin cookies and double chocolate chip. Some might say boring and safe choices, but for me (a very novice baker) it was quite a smart choice hehe.

    • Good call on the running magazine. Although maybe it would inspire me to pick it up as a hobby? πŸ™‚ Hehe. I know how you feel about seeing a new magazine issue though- it brings a smile to my face.

Now You See Me was completely different than I expected but I enjoyed it all the same. You should let me know how you like it after renting.

I would argue that baking is never boring nor safe (as my burn marks indicate quite well πŸ˜‰ ). Those cookies sound delicious!

  10. holy cow that chicken looks amazing. I would kill to be able to cook a whole chicken. I may have to get one when my dad is here. I don’t read magazines but more because I don’t want to spend money on them so I can’t really give the best advice on that

    • It was SO good πŸ™‚ I cook whole chickens all of the time. Actually, all of my meat comes from whole chickens, although I usually make them in the crock pot so I can walk away and forget about it for a few hours or overnight.

Money is certainly a factor for me as well when picking a magazine to subscribe too. I try to just pick the cheapest ones. Most of the ones in the fundraising sale you can get for 12 or 15 bucks a year.

  11. I burned my arm with a cookie sheet too a few years back — it got me on my upper left arm and I still have a faint scar as a result. The things we do for our passions of baking. Ha-ha. (I call it a battle scar. ;)) I’ve been craving chicken with roasted squash for days now — I have to make some soon or I’ll go insane.

I’m so glad you’ve had an enjoyable break — good luck with your classes! ❀

    • I have a few faint scars too from baking… All over my hands and arms. “Battle scar.” I’m going to have to use that one πŸ˜‰

Chicken and roasted squash is a great craving to have. It was so tasty! You should get on that and make some πŸ™‚

It was an awesome weekend and I can’t wait for my even longer weekend this week for Fall Break! πŸ˜€

Good luck with your classes too.

  12. I never thought to get healthy magazine subscriptions – I think they would be a great movitational tool too! I have lots of cooking scars too – all my flatmates had a burn in the same place on their hand from our stupid oven!

  13. Sounds like you had way more rain than I did, and I had to deal with Tropical Storm Karen (which ended up being a glorified rain shower, thankfully). I hate driving in that kind of weather!
I’m not a big magazine reader, so I don’t really have any recommendations.
I thought Now You See Me was pretty good; my good friend’s sister actually worked on costume design for it.

  14. So:
InStyle is my number one magazine! Other than that, it sounds like we read a lot of the same things.
    Um. Those pumpkin bars. Yum.
    Your dog is sooooo cute!
    Youch that burn looks awful!!
Haha that’s so nice of your dad to do that for you. πŸ™‚
I wish my school had a break. Have fun on yours!!

    • I have never read InStyle before… but after checking out their website I like what I saw! πŸ™‚

The pumpkin pie bars are even egg-free so you can eat them… Well, if you sub out the almond flour for something else. Haha. There is always something, isn’t there?

I hope school is going well for you and you are enjoying teaching! Have you figured out the storage and picture issues with your blog yet? I hope to see an update from you soon πŸ™‚

  16. 😦 for burning your arm on the oven and having to do all that driving in the rain (that’s my least favorite weather to drive in). My friends and I would read cosmo as a joke in college and I always look through Real Simple when my mom gets one but I’m not a huge magazine lover sorry!

  17. I’m a total magazine addict as well. I literally have piles of them, and that doesn’t even include the mags I have on my iPad. Glamour, Seventeen, Fitness, Time just to name a few. The problem with my addiction is that they are way more expensive here in Taiwan. But the heart wants what the heart wants. πŸ˜›

  19. Oh man, you got caught in that rain. It was crazy, and thankfully the Hubby just missed it. I called him on his way back to school on Sunday and told him to drive like a mad man because the storm was kissing his heels….or tires, but you get the idea.

I have no magazine ideas. In fact, I’ll give you some of mine because I have too many and no time to read them. I call my magazine pile my stack of shame, which is rather depressing. I might need to rethink the name.

Last weekend I cleaned. A lot. Partially preparing for Heather’s visit and partially because I need to Fall Clean (like Spring, just done now) and her visit gave me the motivation to do so. Also since we had no official plans, I needed to control something and cleaning was it.

You are officially on Fall break right now, and I’m officially enjoying my last day of vacation. Cheers to us.

P.S. The Pumpkin Apple Cinnamon Roll is a great photo, and the pumpkin bars….stacking is where it’s at.
