{Belated} Halloween Favorites

Happy Belated Halloween!

Technically I am typing this post up on Halloween so that “belated” shouldn’t be in there, but I figured that most of you wouldn’t be reading this until November 1 so… Technicalities.

As a wrap up to the Halloween extravaganza I thought it would be fun to do a short Halloween Favorites survey!

Ready? Too bad. You don’t have a choice 😉

What is your favorite Halloween movie?

Halloweentown from Disney Channel.

halloween-movie

Fun fact: The girl who played Marnie is also the voice on the Trix commercials that said, “Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids!”

Pick your favorite chocolate AND non-chocolate candy.

Dark Chocolate Kit-Kats and Black Licorice Jelly Beans.

halloween-candy

Do they even sell dark chocolate Kit-Kats anymore? No judgement on the black jelly beans. You haters are crazy.

What is your favorite seasonal candy?

The mixed bags of candy corn with the regular, pumpkins and chocolate.

halloween-candy-corn

The pumpkin shapes just made these 10 times more fun.

Which Halloween costume from your childhood was your favorite?

I went as a waitress one year with my best friend and we served “eyeballs” on plates.

halloween-hope-2

We got the waitress idea from some super ugly blouses that I acquired from my mother and were hanging in my closet at the time… And this book that my friend was reading. She was Hope. And I was Faith. Super original, I know.

If you could go as anything for Halloween, what would it be?

A witch!

halloween-ecards-2

E-cards= I ❤ you.

How did you collect your candy when trick or treating?

We had the classic plastic orange pumpkins every single year. Nothing fancy.

halloween-pail

I think we still have these downstairs in our basement actually!

What is the funniest trick that you’ve ever seen played on someone for Halloween?

I really haven’t seen anything that fantastic. The look on someone’s face after being “spooked” though is pretty hilarious.

halloween-haunted-house-collage

Buzzfeed has 40 more of these pictures from a Haunted House if you are curious: http://www.buzzfeed.com/awesomer/best-pictures-of-scared-bros-at-a-haunted-house-of-20 DO IT. They are so funny.

What is your favorite part of Halloween?

Dressing up and getting to be someone else for the night. When I was younger it was getting to have Halloween parties at school with all of the wonderful candy and cookies that parents brought in.

halloween-cookie-collage

Does anyone remember when these required a little more manual labor before baking? They used to come in tubes and you would have to slice all of the cookies before popping them into the oven.

Oh, and I just realized that I did a similar post last year for Halloween listing my top 5 “scary” Halloween movies.

Also, if you have any leftover candy that you don’t know what to do with, you can always use the candy corn to make candy corn popcorn and the chocolate pieces in my candy pizza!

What did you do to celebrate Halloween this year?

Answer some of the survey questions above!

WIAW: ABC Survey

Howdy! It’s that special time of the week where we all gather together and share our wonderful eats! Today I’m going to again combine two link-ups, Together Tuesdays and What I Ate Wednesdays and intersperse in my post some recipes that I’ve seen from fellow bloggers that I think look share-worthy.

The meat of this post is going to be comprised of that ABC survey that you’ve seen from a gazillion and one other bloggers already. (I’m not going to apologize though because surveys make me happy 🙂 ) Thanks to Alex for tagging me and fueling survey addiction!

WIAWbutton

together-tuesdays

A- Attached or single?

Single.

B- Best friend?

I have a group of a few really close friends that I’d call my “besties” (if I was one to use that word 😉 ). We actually did a Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants-esque thing this past year where we each had a blue notebook for a week, wrote in it, and then mailed it down the line. We were supposed to do it over the summer too but someone (me) has had it since Memorial Day and I keep on forgetting to write in it and send it. Whoops.

Speaking of best friends, I actually just posted this link in the group my friends and I created on Facebook to stay in touch. I found it via Bean Bytes:

C- Cake or pie?

Why choose? Why don’t you just eat a cherpumple?

Totally kidding. But isn’t that one of the craziest creations you have ever seen? It’s a three layer “cake” with a pie baked into each cake portion.

survey-cherpumple

Apple pie in spice cake. Pumpkin pie in yellow cake. Cherry pie in white cake. (Click picture for link to blog post)

D- Day of choice?

Ummm. Saturday? I won’t think too hard because that’s a tough one.

E- Essential item?

I’m going to be practical here and go with my contacts. I hate wearing glasses because I feel like I’m always looking out of a window and I get headaches whenever I have to wear them for very long. My contacts are my savior. (See glasses picture farther down for another reason- no matter how many times I get them adjusted they just won’t stay on my nose!).

F- Favorite color?

Pink. I also like purple, lime green, teal. Classic girl colors, I know.

G- Gummy bears or worms?

It would have to be sour gummy worms. Those are addicting.

survey-gummy-worms

H- Hometown?

Super small with less than 1000 people. Surrounded by corn fields and farms. Your classic one stop light country town.

I- Indulgence?

This probably makes me a total nerd but the first “indulgence” that popped into my head was books. Go ahead, laugh all you want. I considered posting something classier but I’m trying to keep it real.

happy-herbivore-me-edited

J- January or July?

Definitely July. January is pretty depressing because it’s right after Christmas and the whole month I’m just thinking, “I can’t believe I have to wait another year until December 25.” Oh, and the obvious thought of “It’s cold.”

christmas-morning-snow

K- Kids?

I know that just because the answer to A is “single” doesn’t guarantee that the answer to K is “no.” But there really should be a “If you answered ____ to Question A, then skip question K. Ha 😉

L- Life isn’t complete without…?

Love. Happiness.

survey-love-happy

M- Marriage date?

If you answered “single” to A then skip this question. (See? How hard was that?)

survey-single

N- Number of siblings?

One brother. He just turned seventeen about a month ago.

wiaw-bday-cake-light

O- Oranges or apples?

Apples. You can’t make a pie out of an orange. Actually, you probably can, but nothing beats apple pie.

P- Phobias?

I’m sure I have one, but I can’t think of any right off the top of my head. Here’s a good one though: Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia. A fear of long words.

Q- Quotes?

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” -Eleanor Roosevelt (repeated by Joe from The Princess Diaries 🙂 )

survey-quote

R- Reasons to smile?

It’s almost time for school again! 😀 (Reason I’m a nerd Numero Dos).

S- Season of choice?

I have such a hard time picking. There are parts that I like about them all!

T- Tag 5 People…

(I just picked bloggers that I hadn’t seen do the survey yet. If I missed you, you are officially “tagged” and if you already did this, consider yourself “untagged”).

Anna @ Anna the Apple

Diane @ Life of Di

Rebecca @ Half Baked Bec

Chloe @ My Search for a Healthier Life

Fiona @ Fit Fiona

Jessie @ Jessie Bear What Will You Wear

Meghan @ Clean Eats Fast Feets

U- Unknown fact about me?

I’m super woman!

survey-secret

Bahaha. Or not.

V- Vegetable?

I think I like most vegetables. The only kind that I’ve tried and didn’t particularly like was a radish.

survey-vegetable

But how good do these radish chips look from Clean Eating Veggie Girl? (Click picture to be taken to recipe)

W- Worst habit?

Saying “sorry” all of the time. I apologize out of habit, even when I’m not at fault.

X- X-rays or Ultrasounds?

X-Rays most definitely (at least in my experience so far). I had to have an ultrasound of my bladder and as such wasn’t allowed to use the restroom all day because it had to be “full.” Oh goodness was that fun.

Y- Your favorite food?

Seeing as how this has no other stipulation I am going to go with Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream.

survey-cookie-dough

Homemade chocolate chip cookie dough bites (with peanut butter) from Julianna Bananna! Grain-free, dairy-free and egg-free! (Click on picture to be taken to recipe)

Z- Zodiac sign?

Aries I believe. However I don’t think I really match up with the Aries (March 21-April 19) description. I was actually born 3 weeks early so I’ve always wondered if I was more like a Taurus (April 20-May 20). Can zodiac signs work like that?

Questions for you:

Have you ever had a cherpumple before?

What zodiac sign are you? Do you read your horoscope frequently?

Have you linked up at Together Tuesdays or What I Ate Wednesday yet? What recipes did you share?

Easter/Birthday Style WIR, WIAW and Survey

Thanks for all of your birthday wishes on Monday! They were very much appreciated and each one brightened my day, especially in the midst of mundane college classes.

Now it’s time for another party hosted by Peas and Crayons. WIAW!

To start, a fun ABC survey that has been circling around the blog-o-sphere for awhile (and I’m sure you are all tired of by now!):

A. Age: As of 8:01 PM Monday… 19 years old!

B. Bed size: Twin loft bed at school. Queen at home.

C. Chore you dislike: There is not really a chore I dislike per say, but the context that it’s in can make a world of difference. For example, ask me to take out the dog during the summer and I’d say OK! Ask me in the winter and I’ll give you the death glare though. 🙂

D. Dogs: Love them. I have two right now, one inside and one outside. Our cairn terrier Lilly is inside, and Riley our mix is outside.

wiaw-dogs

E. Essential start to your day: My alarm clock, breakfast (no question about that, I would die from hunger without it), and brushing my teeth (<<< I hate going through the day with the feeling of having not brushed my teeth!).

F. Favorite color: Pink.

G. Gold or silver: I’m not much of a jewelry person at all really. I wear the same diamond earring studs everyday which are gold, but most of the time I tend to buy silver pieces because those seem to be younger/more modern.

H. Height: 5’6″

I. Instruments you play(ed): I can play the clarinet fairly well as I was in band for 8 years during school.

wiaw-band-geek

J. Job title: Past job titles: Babysitter, Tutor. Current job title: Student. Future job titles: internist, accountant.

K. Kids: Well, I’m assuming this is asking if I have any kids, to which the answer is a definite NO. However, I love kids. My favorite thing to do at church is volunteer or supervise in the nursery. And every summer since eighth grade (not this year though… *sniff sniff*) I worked in the nursery for Vacation Bible School.

L. Live: Midwest United States. Our house is in the country surrounded by cornfields on some 15 or so acres of land.

M. Mom’s name: Eh, I would rather not share that right now 🙂

N. Nicknames: Maddy is the only nickname that people ever called me.

O. Overnight hospital stays: A few I think… I had jaundice when I was a baby, so I had to stay for awhile because of that.

P. Pet peeves: A few “ranty” ones: people who cheat/lie and get away with it, social media hounds, when someone is constantly on the computer or texting, and when people can’t see how fake some others are.

Q. Quote from a movie:

wiaw-movie-quote-titanic

R. Righty or lefty: Righty.

S. Siblings: Brother (16).

T. Time you wake up: Weekdays from 6:00-7:00. Weekends from 5:30-8:30… It really depends.

U. Underwear: ?? Yes. Underwear is nice.

V. Vegetables you don’t like: Radishes and… That’s basically it!

W. What makes you run late: Anything and everything.

X. X-rays you’ve had: Do ultrasounds count? If so, I’ve had two of those.

Y. Yummy food you make: I would like to think that all of the food I make is yummy! 😉

Z. Zoo animal favorites: Monkeys! Before leaving the zoo each time I always begged my mom to buy one of those stuffed monkeys in the gift shop that you could attach around your neck with Velcro. It worked… About half the time.

And it’s time for another Week in Review!

Week-In-Review-Button-Final

  • I posted my usual WIAW last week with my favorite recipe for soup: Kabocha and peas.

wiaw-kabocha-squash-pea-soup

  • On Friday I skipped talking about food for once and wrote about something a little more serious. All of your comments were so supportive and awesome! Look for a response from me soon!
  • As I stated in my Wednesday post, I was rather busy with school last week. Three papers and two exams. I feel pretty good about them all!

wiaw-test

  • On Friday night I stayed in and watched this movie with my mom:

lol

  • Don’t hate on Miley Cyrus or Demi Moore as it was actually rather good!
  • During the day Saturday I did a little shopping and got together a little present for one of my friends whose birthday happens to be the day before mine!

Wiaw-green-present[1]

  • On Saturday night I went with my parents and met up with a few of my friends to the local Opera House to watch Oz: The Great and Powerful.

wiaw-oz

  • Sunday morning I woke up to find this large post-it taped to my door from the Easter Bunny. Yes, it’s extremely childish, but it’s tradition! My mom makes up a small Easter basket for my brother, my dad and I, then she goes and hides it somewhere.  Any guesses where I found mine?

wiaw-easter-bunny

wiaw-Easter-basket[1]

  • This year my mom was also inspired to do a little Easter egg hunt outside. My dad hid the eggs and my mom wrote down where they were (we’ve had trouble remembering in the past!). My brother and I each had six to find, his were yellow, green and blue, and mine were purple, pink and orange. At the end we were both left with one that we couldn’t find, and funny enough we both knew where each other’s was!

wiaw-Easter-eggs[1]

  • I made my parents some waffles for breakfast from this recipe (I used 1/4 cup acorn squash, only 1 tbsp honey and ghee for the fat options).

Wiaw-paleo-waffles[1]

  • That morning we also got dressed up in our springy colors and went to church. Then afterwards we drove to a local Chinese buffet to have lunch with my uncle, cousins, aunts, and grandparents. (I had a bowl of soup on the way over and just a glass of water at the restaurant).
  • Then when I got home I packed up everything for school and my mom gave me a small birthday present. Next weekend we’ll do our traditional shopping for real so that I can pick up a few things.

mimm-b-day-collage

wiaw-duck-dynasty[1]

  • Two episodes of Duck Dynasty were thus consumed rapidly by the family– None of them had ever seen it before!

wiaw-duck-dynasty-si

  • And for those that worried about my lack of cake… I had some. Sort of. I had to get a little creative and made some flour out of dehydrated peas. Try it. Green pea flour is awesome!
  • To make the “cake” it was quite easy and for those needing nutritionally-dense food on the go, I would say it was rather good. Like a single-serving green monster cake!

Single-Serving Green Monster Cake

High protein, grain/gluten/wheat-free, egg-free, nut-free, dairy-free, paleo/Gaps-friendly

wiaw-green-monster-cake-collage-2

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup green pea flour
  • 1/2 cup mashed acorn squash (banana or another mashed squash would work well too)
  • 1 tbsp organic honey
  • 1 tbsp organic coconut oil
  • 1/8 tsp sea salt

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Combine all of the ingredients well. (I used a food processor- It will be a rather thick batter)
  3. Scoop into a 1-cup sized ramekin. Bake for 25 minutes. Eat warm or cool. This would also be awesome topped with a nut butter!

Hmm… Strange But Good worthy, no?

strange-but-good

  • I took a few bites to satisfy my (green) cake craving, but no more because I didn’t want to be sick on my birthday from deviating from my regular meat and veggie routine! 😉
  • Boring-ness resumed just minutes later as I made my way back to school listening to some audio books in the car.
  • Then April Fool’s Day.

And that’s last week in review. I hope this one goes just as well, and I can’t wait to celebrate my birthday for real this Saturday!

QUESTIONS FOR YOU:

Share a few ABCs about yourself!

How did you celebrate Easter?

What was the highlight of your week?

Have you seen LOL or Oz yet?

ABC… Easy as 123

Sorry for the long, unexplained absence from blogging! I have some great, informative (and delicious) posts coming up, so STAY TUNED.

Meanwhile, I decided you write up a little ABC post to tell you a little bit about me outside of blogging. Here it goes…

A- Accounting. I love doing mental math, and algebra was one of my favorite subjects in school. On those personality questionnaires I always received the description of “analytical” so accounting is a good fit for me!

B- Banana Ice Cream. Enough said.

image

C- Cats. All of my cats have been named after famous painters or literary characters. Leo (Davinci), Vince (VanGogh), Scout (To Kill a Mockingbird). My brother’s cat is Apollo (the Greek god of music)… or introvert as he is affectionately nicknamed.

image

D- Dogs. Okay! More animals. We have two dogs; one is outside and one is inside. Lilly is our inside Cairn Terrier. Riley is our outside mix (we got him from the pound).

image

E- Elephant Ears. These were my favorite treats at the fair when I was younger. Most kids loved cotton candy or french fries, but not me! Paired with a corn dog for lunch, elephant ears were the highlight of the week. (Now… I just need to come up with an allergy-friendly version!)

F- Falcon. My high school’s and college’s mascot. Coincidence? I think not!

G- Gold or silver. Silver… Gold makes me feel OLD!

H- Hair. It’s naturally curly, but when it’s long it seems to be wavy.

image

I- Ice. I love crunching on ice. It keeps me occupied in restaurants when I’m bored. Plus: It really annoys my mom 😛

J- Jump Rope. It’s kind of a hate-and-love relationship for me. In Kindergarden my favorite recess activity was jumping rope and singing those crazy songs… Cinderella, dressed in yell-a, ran upstairs to kiss a fella. By mistake she kissed a snake, how many doctors did it take? One… Two… Three.

K- Kale. Vegetable of the summer. Put on the broiler, wash some kale, and lay it out on a cookie sheet. No oil needed and still CRISPY!

image

L- Laps. If I could pick one exercise to do for the rest of my life, it would be swimming laps at a pool. Swimming is so much better than running, and lifting weights, and doing lunges…

M- Madison, Me, Muffins… Obviously my favorite letter ever!

image

N- Nancy Drew. My favorite books when I was younger. One day my grandma brought out a big stack of her old, musty, original Nancy Drew novels. Blue binding and all! Sometimes I even go back and reread my favorites.

O- OOOOOOO…. For some reason this reminds me of cOOkie dOugh. Perhaps because there are so many O’s? But, anways. Cookie dough is my favorite food. I love making protein powder taste like cookie dough. Chocolate chip cookie dough tastes way better than baked cookies (Did I really just say that? Hmmm… yes. Yes I did.)

image

P- Pet Peeves. Grammar mistakes (I know, I make a lot too!). Text messaging lingo- I get lol and idk, but I HATE when people abbreviate every single word in a message. “Do you really think I’ll understand that?”

Q- Quotes. To reference the mighty Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory: “Hummingbirds are the vampires of the flower world.” “I am not crazy; my mother had me tested.” “I am immune to your sarcasm.” And… “BAZINGA!”

R- Radishes. I just don’t get their appeal. YUK.

S- Sweet Potatoes. My favorite vegetable. So sad they hurt my stomach! Ah… Nevertheless. One day, one day I shall eat them again!

T- Tigger. The best character from Winnie the Pooh.

U- Underworld. A new book by Meg Cabot that I am dying to read!

image

The first book was so good!

V- Vaseline. Really good for hands in cold weather!

W- Water. I really don’t like it a lot, but I drink it because I have to, or else I’d die. Positive thinking, right?

X- X-rays. Of which I have had none. Knock on wood… and then trip over it and break my ankle. (Don’t worry, I kid, I kid!)

Y- Yams. Really, what is the difference between sweet potatoes and yams? Anybody know?

Z- Zucchini bread. For the past two weeks I have been feverishly searching for a recipe for zucchini bread that I CAN EAT! No sugar, no yeast, no flour, no eggs. I’m thinking: almond flour, protein powder, stevia, zucchini, pumpkin, salt, baking powder (without corn), olive oil… Any thoughts?
