“I Need Sustenance”

“This mortal form has grown weak. I need sustenance.”

PLEASE tell me you know where that quote is from.

If you don’t, that’s okay. I’ll forgive you just this once.

It’s actually one of many hilarious lines in one of the best superhero movies I’ve ever seen, Thor!

sustenance-thor-1

Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor, says this line after he falls from the sky and then is promptly tasered and taken to the hospital. And then he breaks out of said hospital. Ya… I’d be hungry too.

When coming up with the title for today’s post I couldn’t help but be reminded of that movie line since Thor has been on my mind all day week. The main reason being that I’m going to watch the sequel at the premiere tonight! Thor: The Dark World.

sustenance-thor-2

Say a prayer for me friends. 11:00pm. Yes, that is usually my bedtime on nights that I stay up LATE. And yes, that is when the movies STARTS tonight. Jeepers.

To prepare I took an hour nap at around 5:00pm so that I could rest up a bit. I am able to fall asleep just about anywhere and it’s happened before. However, I really don’t want to fall asleep in the movie theater tonight because then I’d miss out on the awesomeness that is Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Kat Dennings, and Tom Hiddleston (<< my friend would kill me if she saw that I listed the actor who played Loki last. Good thing she doesn’t read my blog 😉 ).

Also to make up for the lack of sleep and to increase the likelihood of not falling asleep in class tomorrow (I said *increase* mind you… I make no promises to fully prevent), I am also going to set my morning alarm clock for an hour or two later. Every bit counts!

The second reason why “I need sustenance” popped into my mind was because of the recipe that I have to share with you all today!

Usually, as you already know, I prefer to post baked goods and desserts. In my opinion there is just a lot more room for creativity and fun when it comes to them. However, I make an equal amount of savory foods when I’m home. So I figured it was high time that I post at least one of them!

I can’t take full credit for the idea of this recipe since I found it on the Paleo Plan site, but I did modify it some to fit the ingredients that we have at home. Here is the original version if you want to check it out, and I will post my adapted version below.

Meatball Zucchini Skillet

Meatball Zucchini Skillet

Grain/Gluten/Wheat-Free, Nut/Peanut-Free, Egg-Free, Dairy-Free Option, Paleo/GAPS-Friendly

Makes 3-4 servings

Meatball Zucchini Skillet

Ingredients:

  • Grass-fed butter (coconut oil would also work but the butter gives a great flavor)
  • 1/2 large vidalia onion
  • 1 pound grass-fed ground beef (if using lean beef you may need to add an egg to hold the meatballs together)
  • 1 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 2 medium zucchinis
  • 2 medium tomatoes
  • sea salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

  1. Put your skillet on medium-high heat.
  2. Then dice your onions and add them to the skillet with 1-2 tbsp of butter. Saute for around 5 minutes until translucent.
  3. While the onions are cooking take your grass-fed ground beef and roll them into small 1 1/2 inch balls (we came up with about 20). Add the meatballs to the pan and cook for around 10 minutes, stirring them occasionally, flipping them over to get even cooking, and adding any additional butter if needed to prevent sticking (<< we didn’t need any since our beef had a higher fat content, but if you are using lean ground beef the extra butter may be necessary).
  4. When the beef is cooking wash and dice up the zucchini and tomatoes. Add those to the skillet next along with the seasonings.
  5. Place a lid over the skillet and reduce to medium heat. Cook for around 5 minutes then remove the lid, stir and put it back on top of the skillet. We cooked the beef and vegetables for another 5 minutes or so until tender, but keep checking them to see when they are done for you.
  6. Finally plate up some of the meatballs and vegetables topping with salt and pepper as desired.

Meatball Zucchini Skillet

Now, you call up Chris Hemsworth and tell him that if he’s still hungry… I’d be more than HAPPY to make him up something (read: anything! 😉 ).

After I post this I am going to attempt to do some Astronomy homework before I get ready to head to the movie theater and wait in line. I will let you all know next week (and most likely much sooner on Instagram!) how I liked Thor 2 🙂

  1. Thor and zucchini!? I’m in love with this post 🙂 good luck at the premier, your excitement should be enough to keep your mortal form awake! If not there’s always coffee….

  2. Yum! With the exception of the meatballs, this dish is totally up my alley 🙂 I am definitely into making savory dishes. I am not a baker by any stretch of the imagination. The only ‘sweet’ dish I prefer to cook is anything with sweet potatoes 🙂 My very favorite food!!

    • I think sweet potatoes normally fall under savory as well… but I guess I think of buttercup squash as almost a “dessert” so I’ll let it slide 🙂 Haha. But then again, sweet potato casserole is amazing so I retract my previous statement.

  3. I have to admit I’m not much of a super hero fan, but my husband sure is. He always drags me to see the latest super hero movies, so I’m sure we will be seeing Thor soon!

I love the zucchini skillet! I make one very similar, but using chicken sausages, sun dried tomatoes, onions and a sprinkle of feta cheese. It is always so satisfying!

    • Are you a fan of comedies? Because if so this is one superhero movie that you should definitely watch. It was hilarious! Let me know what you think when your husband drags you to it 🙂

That does sound very similar. I think chicken sausages would be a fun way to change it up. Thanks for the idea.

  4. “Another!” Gosh, I love those movies! 🙂
For once, we Europeans got treated to an early start, so I already watched Thor 2 last Thursday. Yes, on Halloween! It was just as awesome as I had hoped.
Team Loki for life! But I actually love all the characters, especially Lady Sif, Fandral, Heimdall, Frigga, Darcy, Dr. Selvig …

    • Oh man, that’s when he tries coffee for the first time!

One of my roommates has a best friend studying abroad in Europe and she watched it earlier too. So, we made sure to stay from her recommendation to see the 2 after credits clips 🙂

You would love my friend with her Loki t-shirt on last night… And today since she decided to fangirl Thursday AND Friday in honor of the event.

After the movie I still think Thor is my favorite, but I agree that I love all of the characters too. Kat Denning’s character Darcy is so funny!

    • I love Iron Man too! Mostly just the first and third because the second was kind of a disaster though. But I would take Pepper Pott’s assistant position any day if she wanted a break 😉

Yes! You must get a cast iron because they are so nice to cook with.

  5. I saw the first Thor and quite enjoyed it. I’m not a huge superhero film fan but I do love the XMen films. I have to say I haven’t seen Iron Man, the new Spiderman, Avengers…I’m just not a big fan of those sorts of things. BUT the new Thor does look good…I quite like Natalie Portman! I think she’s a great actress.
Hope you enjoy it as much as you hope 🙂

    • I love the X-Men films too! I can’t wait for X-Men First Days of Futures Past to come out next year 🙂

Iron Man 1 and 3 were good (2 not so much…), the new Spiderman was also pretty great, but in my opinion Avengers just didn’t cut it. I bet that a lot of superhero fans would hate to hear me say that, but it’s true 🙂

Natalie Portman is one of my favorite actresses as well ever since I first saw her in Star Wars and then Where the Heart Is.

I definitely enjoyed it as much as I hope! Thanks 🙂 The movie was surprisingly quite funny and I think you’ll enjoy it as well Anna!

  6. I love going to the midnight premiere for movies! I am planning on going Catching Fires!
To be honest I am not a huge fan of superhero movies…I usually just wait to watch them on TV.
And deliciousness your recipe sounds amazing!!

    • Truthfully The Hunger Games midnight premiere for me was kind of a disappointment, but Thor 2 was definitely worth it!

Haha. I wait for things like comedies to air on TV or come out on Netflix. Not all comedies, just the Adam Sandler type or those rated R which are not worth the 10 dollar ticket.

  7. X-men is my all time fave, but Thor is also pretty great. 🙂 I really missed Natalie Portman in Avengers, so glad she is in Thor 2 which I can’t wait to see.

Oh, and I also love Batman, Spiderman, Ironman, Captain America … well pretty much all of them. 😛

  8. I would be doomed with an 11pm movie!! For some reason, my body thinks movie time is nap time. It doesn’t matter what time of day it is, whenever I start watching a movie (at home, in the theater, on a plane), I immediately fall asleep!! Usually takes me multiple sittings to work my way through them!

  9. sweet AND savoury is the only way to go!

I haven’t seen Thor but it was on TV last night! I’m not a huge fan of superhero movies. Acrtually, my movie taste is pretty crap- I like the most random movies!

Hope your weekend isn’;t study filled friend!

    • That seems to be the new trend, doesn’t? I always associated sweet and salty with snacks and desserts like pretzels and chocolate. But dang people are creative! The egg and jam sandwich is seriously genius.

Okay, so this completely explains why you didn’t like the tv show Arrow. It’s basically superhero.

Now you’ve piqued my interest. What are the random movies that you like?

  10. Mmm, this recipe looks GREAT! Wait…no, that’s just Chris Hemsworth’s delicious body I’m lusting over! Team Thor all the WAY!! Loki deserves to be listed last! And for the record, since I just recently watched the first Thor a couple months ago, I knew exactly where that quote was from even before I read the next line of your post! Go me! 😀

Hopefully the late night worked out! I’d say hopefully it was worth it, but puh-lease, it’s Thor!! Good god, can I BE Natalie Portman for just a minute?! I don’t usually go for guys with hair as long as mine, but DAMN!

I definitely prefer making savory dishes…if we’re talking cooking versus baking. But if we’re just speaking generally, I couldn’t for once deny my dedication to pancakes, could I?!

    • Actually, how about we just change that to Team Hemsworth? 😉 All three would be fine with me 🙂

I saw on Instagram where you loved Thor too. Wasn’t it just amazing?

I actually just noticed that he had long hair in the latest movie. It normally kind of creeps me out but you are completely right. He can do no wrong.

  15. Skipping Thor, my opinion is that this was great, but the meatballs themselves could have used the seasonings instead of the whole dish. Making the meatballs more Italian would have definitely balanced it a bit more.
