Thursdays are for Thinking Out Loud #1

Hey! What’s this? A post on a Thursday? I know, I know. I’m a constant bundle of surprise.

I decided to break my normal posting schedule to support Amanda and her new weekly link-up for Thinking Out Loud! I’m not sure if I will do this every week because I don’t want all of my posts to become solely for link-ups, but I couldn’t miss out on this inaugural event. This is history in the making.

Thinking-Out-Loud

In true Thursday Thoughts fashion I am taking a cue from Ms. Spoon’s book and going with some numbers….

1. I’m just not feeling super festive yet. Anyone else? Maybe it’s because I still have school in my constant thoughts. If that’s the case, it probably won’t be until next Saturday that I actually start feeling like it’s Christmas time.

2. Despite not feeling all Christmas-y, the constant influx of snow is not letting me forget that we are indeed drawing nearer to Winter. While not a “warm” welcome, it does make me a little giddy and nostalgic to awake to a fresh bed of whiteness on our school lawns. Those happy memories are quickly forgotten though when my feet get soaked as I trudge through the wet snow. I need a new pair of boots that aren’t as thin as paper in the heels.

So basically, I feel like this whenever I go outside.

3. Speaking of boots, lets talk about Uggs for a moment. I own a few pair of knockoffs and they are so warm and comfortable. But are they cute? The consensus among my roommates is no. However, one roommate insists that they are adorable. I think that by definition they are ugly, and that is almost part of their appeal. They aren’t super high fashion so they are accessible to everyone and I feel like I can wear them everyday without much concern. Again, they are the epitome of warm. Nothing more.

 4. I have realized recently that I do best with small changes. Occasionally I do well with just jumping feet first into something (like with this blog, one day it was non-existent and the next I was blabbing away to you all!) But with most things in life it’s better if I get adapted slowly. Like with exercise. I don’t know how many times I have tried to go all out and exercise a lot everyday when I’m first starting. Then within no time I lose that initial excitement and it quickly falls to the way side.

Since Elf For Health‘s challenge on Monday though, I’ve begun slowly adding in just a “bit” here and there. I almost forgot to do the circuit challenge for the day so before going to bed I quickly busted out 5 minutes worth of toning exercises. Is it an overnight transformation? Heck no. However, I’m not doing this to lose weight, and really, I’m not even doing it for the health benefits like potentially reducing the risk of disease, illness, spontaneous combustion, etc. Recently I’ve been intrigued by the idea that incorporating exercise into your daily schedule can help reduce stress and possibly even better digestion. I’m all for that.

Three nights in a row and going strong! 😉 Lol. I have no naive thoughts that what I’m doing is nearly enough, however this time around I want to try the slow approach, adding in a little each day. If you don’t already do wall sits, you really should. Feel the burn.

5. Up next I’m going to make an easy 5 minute arm workout for myself. I love circuits for their short and choppy nature. With reading my favorite books I have no problem doing the same thing for hours on end, but when it comes to working out if I’m repetitive my interest fades fast. What I need is quick and effective stuff where I won’t lose my mind in boredom.

6. Tomorrow (Thursday) is the Hobbit 2 premiere and I am super excited. While I liked the original Lord of the Rings film trilogy I actually think the Hobbit is better thus far. My Loki-loving friend managed to snag seats to a special early showing tomorrow afternoon, so we are driving about an hour north to the city to watch in style. The only thing that could make this sequel better than the first is with the addition of some stellar new cast members. Oh wait, there is! Orlando Bloom as Legolas and Benedict Cumberbatch (as the dragon!). Aren’t you pumped? 😉

8. There are still open spots for the 12 Days of Christmas Recipes link-up! There are 3 or 4 themes left and for those of you worried about being too busy with work and such, all of the days remaining are towards the end so you can work on it in your spare time over Christmas vacation 🙂 A few of the other participants have already been e-mailing me with rough draft versions of theirs (not that you have to do that), which just goes to show how super easy it is join in!

12-days-1

9. I was just going to end with 8… then I suddenly felt a cold blast of air. For some reason unbeknownst to me (and the rest of humanity) someone keeps on turning the air conditioning on in our room. 😯 Hmm… That 6 degree temperature prediction for tonight is not in Celsius, is it? No. No it’s not. However, I’m keeping my lips zipped and pulling on my house slippers in silence. “Peace on Earth, goodwill toward men…”

————————————————————————————————————————————

Questions for you:

What are you thinking about on this bright, cheery (cold) Thursday?

Does ending on an odd number bother any of you?

Have you considered joining in our Christmas recipe fun?

How do you keep warm during the winter? (Electric blankets is not an acceptable solution per University policy. No matter how much I would love to convince them otherwise…)

  1. Lots and lots of layers and blankets haha…and mugs of warm drinks every hour! It’s supposed to be ridiculous tonight through tomorrow night here, and I’m already slightly frightened for my run tomorrow morning with Danielle…return of the running ninja methinks. I like that you’re starting out slow and doing what you can where you can, hun. Running has definitely become one of my biggest forms of stress relief, but I feel the same way about biking at the gym too (plus there I can read and play on my phone, which is a huge bonus so I don’t go crazy not going anywhere). It’s nice to get up, let go of the books for a bit, and move your body! Stay warm hun!

    • Thanks for the reminder about the warm drinks. I always seem to forget how nice a cup of tea can be.

I hope your run went well and you didn’t get too cold.

The only way I ever go on our elliptical trainer downstairs in our basement is with a DVD or book. If I try to go without I just think too much and get overwhelmed. Lol. Walking is different- I like thinking when I walk. But when I run all I can think about is running and how long I’ve been going.

    • Haha. I actually asked that because I figured it would bother a lot of people. Odd numbers that are able to be divided like 9, 12, 15, etc. and “common” odd numbers like 3,5 and 7 don’t really bother me. But 11?! Oh no. There is no way that I would willingly end on an 11. 😉

I completely agree about the alarms though! Mine is a little touchy and I have to old down my finger to get it to zip around from :00 to :59. And I ALWAYS go over to 6:01am. Multiple times.

  2. Holy.gerbils am I excited about The Hobbit. It’s been one of my favourite books since I first read it in the 6th grade, and the thought of seeing Smaug makes me giddy. I’ll be up in the mountains this weekend, and I -still- plan on catching it in the old school theatre they have up there 😆 As for feeling festive, it seems to come and go. Sometimes I’m like “yes to ALL things Christmas!” and other times I’m a bit more Scroogey.

PS – Thanks for linking up 😀 You just rocked my Christmas socks off.

    • While I loved the Hobbit to death, if I could pick the mountains instead I would 🙂 I hope you have a blast Amanda!

I’m kind of hot and cold with Christmas too. The day I wrote this post must have been my Scrooge moment for the week as I just sang 2 hours worth of Christmas songs on my drive home from school.

And thanks for being an awesome host!

  3. My boyfriend is super keen to see the Hobbit as well, it doesn’t come out till Boxing Day, I am not as keen as him but know I will be forced to see it anyway.

I am bummed I missed out seeing Amanda’s link up otherwise I would have jumped on board for sure.

Excited to join the recipe fun on Sunday (or Saturday for you). I’ve found some good ones and I also had a brainwave at lunch time of how I’m going to structure the post…it sounds fancy but I promise it really isn’t 😉

I love the idea of adding in a little more a day. I think there is always the mentality that an extra 5 minutes doesn’t count but when you add it all up over time and throughout the day it really does. Sometimes as well I find if I convince myself to do 5 minutes I’ll end up doing 20 as sometimes the thought of it, puts me off.

    • What is Boxing day? Does that have anything to do with the sport of boxing? Now you’ve got me curious…

Did you like the first Hobbit? I think this one kept my attention even better and as one of my friends said that I watched it with, “There wasn’t a single moment during the movie when I was wondering when it was going to be over.” That’s the sign of a good one in my opinion!

Well I guess you’ll just have to join in next week!

Fancy or not, I’m excited to see what recipes you found. I had to hold off on posting mine until later this afternoon because I was busy with my Astronomy presentation and I wanted everything to be perfect with both. I haven’t looked back at my post since then. It took so long and I’m always so critical of my writing. Lol.

EXACTLY. 5 minutes doesn’t seem like much but a few times a day can really add up.

      • Wow I didn’t realize but it must be an Australian thing, we call the day after Christmas, Boxing Day, I think it has something to do with the Cricket match we always have on here. Yes very strange I know that it is Cricket not boxing!! On Boxing Day they always have insane sales and release new movies as they know everyone is out and about.

I am sorry to say but I didn’t love the first Hobbit, that and Lord of the Rings just aren’t my kind of movies they are a bit too drawn out for my linking…sorry.

Hopefully my post was ok! I didn’t find nearly as many recipes as you did for your post.

I hope your Astronomy presentation went well!

I did 2 different 10 minute workouts this morning and both were really quick!

      • Cool! I’ve never heard of Boxing Day before. We have a similar thing after Christmas Day with the stores having tons of sales, but we just call it “the day after Christmas.” Lol. So original. And they always release new movies the day of Christmas here.

I completely agree that the Lord of the Rings is WAY too drawn out. My friends forced me to watch the extended editions and holy cow 😯 I’m starting to like them better now though.

Your post was great! I had no intention of posting so many recipes in mine, I just kept on finding more and more. I actually had twice as many and had to cut it down. I’m one of those people that felt bad for not picking a certain stuffed animal when I was younger because I didn’t want to hurt its feelings and make it feel left out. Baha.

The Astronomy presentation went great! Thanks 🙂

Quick is my favorite type of workout 😉

  4. Where have I been in life? I’ve never even heard of The Hobbit. By reading a few of your comments it seems as if I must’ve been living in a closet for quite sometime. Ha Ha!

Great workout you put together. I’ll have to try it one evening before I turn in for the night. Is it just me (please say no), but I can do squats all day.. however lunges – YUCK! I hate them.

At this moment I’m thinking about how ridiculously windy it is outside.. and maybe just maybe Joshua will get sent home early from work. Wind=dust storms=impossible to work in 🙂

    • I’m surprised no one commented on here and virtually wrangled your neck. Haha. People can get pretty intense about the LOTR love. Wait, if you haven’t heard of The Hobbit does that mean you haven’t heard of Lord of the Rings either?

I do the workout right before bed too. It’s the only time where I have no good excuse for doing anything else. Plus I don’t have to walk around sore all day 😉 Agreed- squats are way better than lunges!

Ooo… Did Joshua get sent home from work? I hope so! 🙂

  5. I get to see The Hobbit this Friday with my movie-loving friend. I’m so excited!
We have a heating blanket on our couch. Best thing ever! But I always fall asleep on that dang couch. I can hardly ever watch a full movie anymore.

    • What did you think of the movie? I really liked it and so did my Lord of the Rings obsessed friends, but they said that it deterred from the book a lot.

A heated blanket sounds so nice right now 🙂 I think we might have one at home that is still working and maybe since I am by myself I can get it without anyone being the wiser.

    • I always feel like whenever I read blogs everyone finds exercise so fun and easy. I’m glad I’m not the only one who gets bored!

I just got a new pair of the Airwalk version of Uggs. Love them. My old ones I’d had since I was a freshman or sophomore in high school I think and were so torn up. Haha. I need to take pictures side by side of the new vs. old ones.

  6. Haha, Uggs are pretty ugly, but they are also supposedly fashionable. Or I suppose I should rephrase that, they are TRENDY, at least on college campuses. Secret is, no one seems to wear them once you graduate!

Turn on some Christmas music! That always helps me to get in the spirit.

    • Trendy is a great way to describe them. And maybe it’s just where I live, but even adults wear them tons! Lol.

I’ve been listening to Christmas music since the summer! 😉 Looking back on this post, it must have just been the school stress ganging up on me all at once. How could I say that I’m not in the Christmas spirit?! I’m so excited 🙂

    • Oh yes! How are you adjusting to the change in weather? I bet it’s weird for you with all the snow that the North’s been getting lately.

Doesn’t that cat meme make you wonder what their owner is holding up in front to get them to look like that though? Lol.

  7. Ok, first off – that video is hilarious. I seriously lol’d. And secondly, the hobbit 2! We’re also going to see it this weekend. Loved the first one! Happy Thursday!

  8. I seriously cannot believe that Christmas is right around the corner. I also haven’t been feeling quite INTO the season yet, but I’m sure the feeling will emerge very soon.
Short, not-too-intense workouts have been on my agenda as well. Circuits are a favorite of mine and I love that they can be super intense and sweaty or just enough to get the blood flowing and feel the burn!

    • I think I need to watch LOTR again. This time not the extended edition. I liked them okay, but for me The Hobbit has just been easier to follow along with. You will not be disappointed with Orlando Bloom’s appearance. I don’t CARE if he’s not in the book. 😉 After you watch it, let me know what you think about Tauriel!

Are you getting pumped for the new season of Sherlock?!!! I don’t know how I’m going to watch it without a TV but I promise it will be done.

      • SO excited for Sherlock!!!! Omg cannot wait. & I saw the Hobbit. What’d you think? I really loved Smaug and Bilbo (obvi) and I actually surprisingly really loved Bard. Tauriel… meh. I liked some parts with her, but I thought they did the love triangle in a pretty cheesy way. I definitely liked this movie better than the first, but there were still some parts I didn’t like. This is what I get for being such a book nerd! 😛

      • Yes, loved Smaug and Bilbo. Of course Legolas was a pretty great addition. I agree about Tauriel.. What was with that “glow” around her?! I thought she and Legolas together were cute, but obviously that’s not going to work out (and no, this is not a spoiler to anyone reading. haha. well, if you’ve seen the rest of LOTR that is 😉 ).

I really need to read the books! This is pretty much the only book-film adaption that I’ve seen and not read. Well, aside for a few like Star Trek. lol.

        Agree– better than the first!

      • Yeah for real- she looked dumb in half of it and I don’t even think it was her fault… although I’m not in love with that actress anyway. And the book is cute! I actually like the book a lot more than the Lord of the Rings books (not movies though- only movie I’ve seen that is better than the books in my opinion) and definitely better than the hobbit movies!

  9. Omg I saw The Hobbit yesterday and it was AMAZING. I loved, loved it. I love all the LOTR and previous Hobbit film so it really just ticked all the boxes for me.
I think your approach to exercise is great. I wouldn’t run if I didn’t enjoy it believe me. And I’m only going to the gym and being on the blasted boring machines to make sure I’m not losing fitness for when I can FINALLY go back to running and training for a marathon. But honestly, I hate gym machines with a PASSION.
I don’t exercise to lose weight but I like the way it makes me feel and I do believe it reduces stress and definitely helps me sleep better.

  10. Ha-ha, my cats are the reason we don’t put up a Christmas tree anymore — they like to knock it down and eat it… But we don’t have any dogs for them to blame it on. 😉

I love circuit workouts as well! It helps keep my mind occupied. I have to change it up all the time or I just get bored. My favorite kind of circuit is just a (pretty long) list of different exercises, each done for a certain number of repetition/seconds, going through it once and you’re done. Or if I want to work on how many push-ups I can do, I’ll alternate the push-ups with other moves so my arms rest and I get the rest of my body worked as well. That way I can still fit in some of those exercises that aren’t my favorite while not dying from having to do 5 sets of them. Then, as I get accustomed to doing that many of that exercise I can increase the number and/or sets. That’s how I’ve actually started to like push-ups. They used to be my worst fiend, but now I’m gaining some confidence that “yes, Kathleen, you can do push-ups. Keep it up, and you’ll be able to do more than you thought you could before.”

  11. My cats would totally do that if we had a dog. Now, I just get to blame them for the destruction.

Good for you for getting into exercise. I always say the reason I work out is to relieve stress. That and make my jiggly bits a little less jiggly. I’ll be rooting for you and keep mixing it up if that’s what keeps your interest. Don’t burn down any houses though. That’d be bad.
So I hope you enjoyed The Hobbit. I really want to go see it tonight, but since I woke up with this potential cold today, I’m going to play it by ear. Health first, Hobbit second. Boo.

Let me know what you think. Leave a reply!
